I would suggest go through the Workflow modeler guide (wfm user guide). This will be very helpful for WFM/Workflow development.

There are actually two guides to WFM. One is WFM user guide and the other is WFM developer guide. I think the developer guide might be more useful.

The Workflow Developers Guide is based on WFTs but can supply a base understanding of workflow development.

The Workflow Modelers Guide is geared solely to WFM development, but it's probably a reasonable idea to read the other document as well (first)
