Is there a way to specify two single files and two single targets right in the xml file to deploy from server to server? It seems that open deploy requires a dir compare or the use of a file list.Is it also appears that when using a file list you can specify multiple sources, but the target of that file list is singular in nature. Is that correct?
Yes, OD requires either a comparison or a file list - in your case, for deploying a single file - a file list is the right choice. Make sure that the entry(ies) in the file list are specified relative to the source area path that is specified in the config file (or what is passed to the config file as a parameter). When you say "two single targets" - do you mean.

You are correct on the second part.I started out trying to deploy 2 files (a .jar and an .xsl) from two separate source directories to their counterpart directories on a single target server
