choosing TS5.5.2 SP 3 or 4 ; ensuring 6.0 upgrade

Hello,
we are in the planning steps for upgrading a Teamsite 5.0.1 Solaris server, to 5.5.2.
We noticed that there is an upgrade path TS5.5.2 SP3 to TS6.0, but no upgrade path (yet) from TS5.5.2 SP4 to 6.0.

Questions:
- when does IWOV plan to add support for the upgrade path TS5.5.2 SP4 to TS6.0 ?
- should we target 5.5.2 SP3 (and not SP4) to be on the safe side ?

The server in question will move to TS6.0 when there is a business demand to do so, which we can fairly estimate to happen in 6 to 18 months or so.

My guess is that the documentation regarding the upgrade path from 552 SP3 to TS6 was written before 552 SP4 was around. In general, migrating from the latest service pack should be supported and I don't think there were any significant changes between SP3 and SP4 that would affect the migration process - you should be good to go from either (or SP5 or SP6 ... if one should happen to get created before you upgrade again)

TeamSite 5.5 SP4 was released very late in the development cycle of TeamSite 6.0 and the upgrade from 5.5 SP4 to TeamSite 6.0 was not tested and is not officially supported.

To upgrade a server that has TeamSite 5.5 Service Pack 4 to TeamSite 6.0, first uninstall Service Pack 4, rolling back to Service Pack 3. Then install TeamSite 6.0 per the instructions in the TeamSite 6.0 Installation Guide.

TeamSite 6 Upgrade Compatibility
We will support upgrades from TeamSite 5.5.2 SP3 to TeamSite 6 Only. Customers on 5.0.x must first upgrade to TS 5.5.2 SP3, then upgrade to TeamSite 6. If the customer is on TeamSite 5.5.2, pre SP3, they must first upgrade to SP3, then to TeamSite 6. Upgrading from TeamSite 5.5.2 SP4 is not supported in the initial release.

... so in this practical case, I have some doubts about that philosophy. Back to my original questions...

If you are planning to wait more than 6 months to move to 6.0, then there will likely be an SP for 6.0 and likely another SP for 5.5.x. Therefore, going to the most recent SP for your production system is a good step.

Remember, if you have a development server license, you can put 6.0 on a different system, with either a fresh install, or an upgrade install from 5.5.2 SP3.

Although you didn't say so explicitly, I'm going to assume that this upcoming 6.0 SP would officially support upgrading from 5.5.2 SP4 (and perhaps SP5) ?

Also, can you confirm that (if need be) one can
- install 6.0 on server Y
- copy the 5.5.2 SPx backing store from server X to server Y, copy all the scripts, config, ...

and continue the content management on TS 6.0 ?

To answer your first question - We plan to provide an upgrade path from the most current 5.5 SP<x> to the most current level of 6.0 SP or 6.1.

As far as your second question, about copying a 5.5. backing store and then using it for 6.0, there are a couple of items to think about.

The first is just about moving to a new server...There have been numerous posts here on DevNet about this. If the 2nd server has the same IP address and domain name, the transfer will be smoother. You may wish to look at those other posts -

The second is about the upgrade. I am not sure if the 6.0 upgrade writes any new data into the 5.5 backing store. I will get more information and get back to you.

On the issue of the 6.0 backingstore, the installer does not write anything to the backingstore. However, there is an incremental version upgrade that will happen the first time a 6.0 iwserver starts up on a backingstore. This is not a conversion of existing data, but rather an allowance for new data structures to be stored.

The long and short of it is that once you start a 6.0 server on a store, a 5.5.x server will no longer be able to read that store.
