MB Webservices Search DoesNotExist

I am trying to do a Java webservices search for assets that do not have a particular metadata field tagged.

metadata[0].setMName("Editorial Done");
metadata[0].setMID(editorial_mid);

mbSearchContraints[0].setMSearchOperator("NotContains");

I am not setting a value as there is none. This does not return anything. What am I doing wrong? Does some have any example of this?
