Invoking Java from JavaScript in XSLT of a component

Hi,

I have a requirement to invoke Java from JS in XSLT? Can That be possible?

As in,
in the XSLT, I have JavaSript code withinthe script tags.
I would want to use invoke java object from the JavaScript tags.

The TS and LiveSite version is 7.1 and OS is Windows XP.

I have read about the XALAN implementation which could make this possible. If anyone has tried this out. Please help.

Yes, we do it frequently.

For example - string substitution for a value in the xml:
[PHP]

xmlns:string="xalan://java.lang.String"
exclude-result-prefixes="xalan java string">
(You might have other exclude-result-prefixes)

[/PHP]

random number:
xmlns:java="http://xml.apache.org/xalan/java"/>

current time:
xmlns:java="http://xml.apache.org/xalan/java"/>
[/PHP]

I have also developed a way to read from a URL (or file) into a variable when the content is not standard XML. It's a little convoluted but it works. If anyone has a simple way (select="document(...") requires well formed XML) to read non-XML data, I would love to share notes.

Well, I did not get your solution properly..
In the snippet you gave, you are invoking Java from XSLT.
But I wanted to call Java function from JavaScript code in XSLT.
Correct me if I got the solution you gave wrong..

May be you are doing it the hard way. What is your actual requirement? What is it that you are trying to achieve by calling Java from JavaScript?

If you want to call server-side Java from client-side JavaScript, LiveSite won't help you there. You'd need to either
1) create a "callback" page to produce JSON or XML;
2) create a JSP; or
3) write and configure your own servlet.
Then you'd use AJAX to call it. But as HeMan inferred, there may be an easier way to accomplish whatever it is you're looking for.

using the xalan extensions to call out to java is not recommended. If we ever change the xslt processor it's not guaranteed to support the java callouts like xalan.

Is there any plan in the forseeable future to give customers the option to use the XSLT processor implementation of their choice ? Currently we're stuck with an outdated version of Xalan, which is not exactly helpful for good performance.

the xalan version is pretty close to current version but xalan has not technically implemented v2 xslt.

why not use an external for calling java code and keep your stylesheet for just transforming the data into presentation.
