Is it possible to set security on component level? The use case is, when the authors will create pages using LS templates... they will be allowed to edit some of the components based on their access criteria (business defined) on those components.

I am pretty sure component edit has a role associated to it in TeamSite that can be changed. See TeamSite's user's guide about roles.

Yes, there are roles for component edit. But my use case is bit different.
Suppose in a given page I have Component A and Component B. Now, when User A edit the page.. he can edit component A but not Component B and when User B edits the same page he is only allowed to edit Component B and not Component A.

In both the scenario, User A and User B have the same role for component edit, but they are restricted to different set of components edit access.
Just like we use <allowed> for DCRs

AFAK, there is no such functionality available in SitePublisher. Basically, Page edit/ component edit comes as a permission into a role. This is not defined into component level. You should workaround your requirement in way that only a defined user group can edit the component or the content will come from a DCR where you can add permission on different items.
Otherwise you should raise a feature request to Autonomy Interwoven.

If you do file a feature request, please let us know the ID, and we will add ourselves and a client to it. This isn't going to bite us right now, but it could be a major issue in the future if we expand the authoring group.
