I am executing following tpl file on command line as follows and I am getting an error messsage

In 'docroot' mode, -iw_include-location must be used
[/html]What does this mean ? The file specified in here is in place in the specified location, then what location do I need to provide in iw_include-location ?

I tried using iw_include-location as follows

"C:\Interwoven\TeamSite\bin>iwpt_compile.ipl -pt Y:\default\main\sites\WORKAREA
en_US\templatedata\sites\event\presentation\event.tpl -iw_pt-location"

When I am using like this, I am getting error message
"Could not output file: /xml/dates.xml"

xml folder is existing in path "//servername/default/main/sites/WORKAREA/en_US/xml/""
Why is this error coming up ? Does this have to do with -iw_include-location ?
If syntax is correct, then why do I get this error and how to resolve it ?

In manual syntax is provided as
"iwpt_compile.ipl -pt -iw_pt moo.tpl -iw_pt-dcr moo.dcr cow.dcr
-iw_include-location . -ocode ****.ipl ; ****.ipl"

what does iw_include-location concat with ? is it required to concat iw_include-location with -ocode ****.ipl ?

Did you bother to look at the usage information or documentation for iwpt_compile.ipl?

-iw_pt-location is not a boolean flag, it takes an argument which, as described in the documentation is:[indent]Mandatory when the mode attribute of the iw_include tag is docroot. The file path is prepended to the file name provided in the file attribute to form a complete file path (used to virtualize the inclusion).[/indent]

yes you need an argument. There is a period meaning current directory in the example.

Try Workarea, it should be sufficient. In you case "Y:\default\main\sites\WORKAREA\en_US"

I am looking at tutorials rovided in TeamSite and I find following

"iwpt_compile.ipl -pt tutorial_6.tpl -iw_include-location . "

How would this command run, if file path for tutorial6.tpl, which is "C:\Interwoven\TeamSite\examples\Templating\templatedata\tutorials\tutorial6.tpl" is not provided ?

When I tried to run this command without file path, I got error[html]C:\Interwoven\TeamSite\bin>iwpt_compile.ipl -pt event.tpl -iw_include-location Y:\default\main\Microsites\WORKAREA\en_US\templatedata\Microsites\event\presentation

Ok, first few basics:

1. In Perl single dot (".") is String concatenation operator. Somewhere in your code dot is evaluated as such
thus creating Perl Error. Get here and search for "Concatenation".

2. In shell scripting single dot and double-dot denote a path or path fragment. One dot (".") represents
the current directory, two dots ("..") point upwards to the parent directory in the hierarchy.

3. Therefore, Manual's fragment " -iw_include-location . " makes perfect sense. It means "-iw_include-location the_Path_where_we_are_currently".
Your fragment "-iw_include-location . Y:\default\main\sites\WORKAREA..." makes no sense whatever. You've provided
two space-delimited Path references to -iw_include-location thus creating Command's shell Error.

4. So, it "looks" that you are trying to incorrectly create incorrect Command String in Perl and then execute it.
Here is a free advice - divide and conquer. Forget Perl for a moment. Get to a command line screen and start typing.
Figure out an exact Command Syntax that you need in order for all that to work. If in doubt, use fully qualified Path.

When this is done find out how to generate desired Command String in Perl and how to execute generated String. If it still
does not work after due diligence debugging efforts, post your relevant code along with brief problem description.

Look at your current directory - you're sitting in

C:\Interwoven\TeamSite\bin

In your first example, you used

'.'

as the directory to include followed by an extraneous argument

'Y:\default\main\sites\WORKAREA\en_US\'

- and you got the error message indicating

'Could not output file: ./xml/dates.xml'

- because there is no such path as

C:\Interwoven\TeamSite\bin\xml\

Your second example is a bit better but still suffers from your providing poor arguments as again you're attempting to create output in a directory that doesn't exist

'....\presentation\xml\'

Your third example doesn't provide a path for the PT so it assumes it is in the current directory (

IWHOME\bin

) which clearly it isn't.

If you make sure that

IWHOME\bin

is on your PATH - cd to the root of the workarea and then try running the commands like:

mkdir xml

(assuming it doesn't already exist)

iwpt_compile.ipl -pt templatedata\sites\event\presentation\event.tpl -iw_include-location .

(although you may need additional arguments there - like

-iw_pt-dcr templatedata\sites\event\data\name_of_dcr

)

This is not rocket science. If you're having this much trouble understanding out to use a CLT perhaps you should find another line of work.

By the way, to ghet things cleared. iw_include-location is for the output file, right ? ie output getting generated as a result of PT compilation will be in this location ?

You are apparently clueless based on the information you posted - assuming that it is accurate - so you should find yourself another line of work since you aren't cut out for this one.

I suggest you take a good, long, look at what you posted and at the manual with regard to iwpt_compile.ipl and perhaps some basic command-line-tool usage tutorials (if they exist) - and maybe, just maybe, you'll be able to figure this out for yourself. If not, I stand by my initial response - this just isn't your area of expertise and you should try to find something else to do, something for which you do have the requisite skills.

I've given you lots of assistance as have a number of other people - on a subject which is not overly complicated - yet you, and people who are apparently "senior to you" don't seem to understand how to read manuals and use CLTs - is it any wonder that your (and perhaps their) credibility as resources for this kind of work should be called into question?

My posting in no way stops anyone else from posting - and as long as my posts are civil, despite being perhaps somewhat insulting, there's no reason why I shouldn't post such responses in a public forum.

If you look at the last post you made where you were getting the error message:[html]

[/html]And then look carefully at the command you used - you should see that you left off the dash (-) in front of the name of the flag (iw_include-location) such that the name of the flag was seen as an argument and not a flag.

The documentation for this CLT is not that bad and the error message above makes the information a bit clearer. If this were the only time you ever posted something that seemed to be in the category of "brain fart" - that would be one thing - but your posts generally seem to indicate an abundance of confusion and a lack of training - and the forums is not intended to be a replacement for training. Tell your manager that you need to go through the developer courses offered by Autonomy Interwoven in order for you to be able to perform your job well - or at least learn how to show that you put some amount of real thought and [focused] effort into what you're trying to do when posting - something which you have basically failed to do completely in this thread.
