areavpath in workflow updatetask
lcarr
I have a workflow containing an update task. The workflow presents a form to the user who initiated the workflow allowing him/her to select an editor for files attached to the workflow. The workflow update task should move the files from a common workarea to the chosen editor's specific workarea. How can I make the areavpath dynamic so it is calculated based on the selection in the workflow form?

Some more details required on the steps in your workflow.
So, if a user who initiates a workflow and selects the editor, then what is the flow?
I am assuming that in logical way, editor would be notified for the task and editor would login to TeamSite for his/her task. If this is the scenario, then ofcourse you could have an external task or an updatetask embeded in the workflow. This task would by then have the userid and workarea information for that particular editor and once editor starts his task, he will first perform this small updatetask and then have his main task followed immediately after taht.
Does this help?

Please see attached wft file. My workflow has an updatetask as the start task. In this task I attach files to the task and would like to copy these files to the workarea owned by the user selected to edit the files (not the same as the user who started the workflow). When the user assigned to edit the files logs in to TS, they should have a TO-DO item and the files in their workarea. Is this possible or do you recommend another design.

1. Probably your attached file didn't go through. Can you please attach it again?
2. I understand the flow of your workflow now. It seems at the instantiation user selects the editor and then your first task would attach these files to the workflow. I am assuming that you have either an email task or an external task to notify the user about the new task.
Now, are these files already in STAGING also or just in the workarea. If they are in staging also then an update task would be best to work here. All you need is an update task followed by editor's notification task. In this update task you could have a variable for userid which you can set to be same as what user selected during workflow instantiation. That way, depending on which ever userid is selected for editor, this task will be set for that user.
Hope this helps!

Is this
form
the workflow instantiation form, or a
cgitask
form?I'm assuming that the logic for taking a selected editor's name (or userid) and turning it into a valid
areavpath
is already understood by you for the existing environment - yes? Then the remaining issue is how to associate that
areavpath
with your
updatetask
(and presumably subsequent
usertask
's too). If you are doing the prompting during workflow instantiation then you can define a Perl variable within the WFT and use
__INSERT__(...);
code to insert it into place (along with the
owner
attributes too).If you are doing the prompting in an
cgitast
script - then you can make use of routines in
TeamSite::WFtask
for setting the
areavpath
and/or
owner
of tasks that you've already defined during instantiation.Hope that helps

In your attached wft, you have:
< updatetask name="Update Editor Workarea" owner="__TAG__('iw_editor');" overwritemod="t" start="t" lock="f"> __INSERT__("< areavpath v='$area_vpath'/>"); ... __INSERT__("< srcareavpath v='$area_vpath'/>"); ... < /updatetask>
The above won't do anything useful since you've set
both
areavpath
and
srcareavpath
to the
same
value.

Yes, this is where I would like to have areavpath refer to the workarea of the user selected to edit the files. How do I do that? Incidentally, the files are not in staging, they need to be moved from one user's workarea to another user's workarea.

There are probably a number of ways to do this, but only you know what the mapping is for the specific editor to his/her workarea. One way to do it would be to set up a hash with the key being the editor name and the value being the workareas or unique part of the workarea path the editor uses. If the unique part of the workarea name is simply the name of the editor, you don't even need a hash as you can simply build the workarea inline. It's really up to you how you do it.
