Depending on how frequently you create editions and how frequently you remove them, yes - there will eventually be some disk space utilization gains but it's usually a gradual thing as opposed to a whopping amount of disk space to be regained.

Performance-wise, I think there's too much to be gained by removing older editions, but if so - it's probably similar to the disk space utilization - small amounts gradually over time.
