How Preview Triggered with external presentation Code

Hi,

We currently use the tpl to generate another generalised XML which is then picked up by the .NET(installed in Teamsite) code to render the page on to the browser. What I would like to know is how is the control passed on to the .NET engine from where it picks this XML up and renders a page on to the browser.

A small explaination of what triggers the .NET preview will help me a lot.
