CSSDK Workflow setVariable issue

Hey

I've developed a workflow that allows files to be attached and then being distributed across branches. Depending on the type of branch the file list is filtered and revised by removing some files (by path).

All is fine and working with a file list that is not very big, but when handling a few hundred files it crashes giving:
"com.interwoven.cssdk.common.CSException: (Transport marshalling error)].
com.interwoven.cssdk.common.CSException: (Transport marshalling error)
at com.interwoven.cssdk.workflow.jni.WorkflowServiceAdapterImpl.setWorkflowVariables(Native Method)
at com.interwoven.cssdk.workflow.impl.CSWorkflowImpl.setVariable(CSWorkflowImpl.java:168)
at com.corp.prod.teamsite.custom.utilities.MyJavaClass.main(MyJavaClass.java:167"

This occurs when I'm writing the string of comma separated file names removed back to a workflow variable using setVariable. Like I said before it works with a smaller list. My guess is that it is related to writing back to the job XML as there is no issue handling the string with the files itself.

I'm trying to avoid writing this to a file so solve the issue and would appreciate if anyone have an idea on this.

Based solely on your description of the issue I can think of two or three possible causes:

Hi and thanks for the answer.

I did some further investigation and it seems that the limitation on the variable length is 4000ish (so I would guess 4096).
I'll go ahead and handle this by creating temporary files after all.

I've encountered this issue as well (in 7.3.1).

Digging through the jars I noticed in the WorkflowUtils class, there are 2 static methods getLargeVariable() & setLargeVariable().

I've successfully used WorkflowUtils.setLargeVariable() to set a 55k long job variable. Haven't done any tests to see what the upper limit is yet.

Not sure if this method is available in previous versions.

55k was just how long the variable came out to be in my test. We had to manipulate the "deployable.files" job variable to add more files to it and were hitting the 4k limit.

I haven't done enough tests to see if what the limit is.

Also, it seems that the method is available in TeamSite 6.7.1

Just did more testing. I've successfully set and retrieved 2MB job variable. By then it was taking seconds to set it, and even longer to retrieve it. I didn't test with larger variables as that's an order of magnitude greater than what we need.
