how can one modify layuots to different layout ? After an initial layout was selected?

Well if we have Template , and it has layout we constructed 3-5 pages , and then for some reason we need to change layout for a given section

a) Can layouts be changed on the fly ? After initial association and contruction of valid .Page

b) Or we have to create a new page again and physically we must choose a new Layout at initial stages

The layout can be changed on the fly.

However if you rename the fields, you may lose the components inside those fields.

Obviously if you delete a field, the components go away.

Nipper can you share , the process / steps needed to change layouts with in Site Editor , editable page

I have not yet seen this happening which is why I was asking if that is even doable where can we switch layouts after a page has been initially setup first time

OK, my question is, are you asking about editing the page layout (which is easy) or are you wanting to change the layout from A to B ?

Cannot do the latter (that I know of) but you can edit the XML, in the workarea, something like iw/config/fixed-layout/threecolumn.xml

i.e Yes we have to modify the actual , XML file

But not from Siteeditor itself we cannot change the layout

What I was really trying to understand , was if a layout was selected once for a page , and now they wanted to add a layout with right rail , can't we just switch the layout right from the site editor?

The assumption is that the layout already lives in system (Layout type 1 , Layout type 2)

I was just trying to understand the implications of the steps

1- Can I change the layout from 1 -> 2 , just selected from existing layouts in system

2- Can I do it from Site Editor

3- How would that impact tha components that may have lived on the page prior to me trying to change

It can be done (but is not supported) by directly modifying the .page XML (and the EA and the association).

Components map to layout areas by the ID of that area. Thus, if your area IDs are consistent from source to target layout, and you're adding areas rather than subtracting them, then you shouldn't need any adjustments to content. In the reverse situation, you'd have to "move" the components out of the deleted workareas by either deleting those component instances or putting them in areas that exist and then assigning them a proper sequential index for that area.

Again, this is not supported by the vendor, but it works.

Thank you folks for share , certainly helps , to understand the application seems like we can do the reassociation of COMs vs layout areas provided we do some scripting to adjust the ids after the change up

I was hoping for direct functionality from the site editor itself but thank you the answer solves the question I had
