Determine runtime within Page Layout

Within my page layout XSL I am trying to determine whether I am in preview, edit or runtime mode.

I have tried setting a page scope parameter in a pre-controller on the site. But it appears PAGE_SCOPE inst available until after the page has rendered. Because the xsl:if always fails, but the correct vaslue is output into my xsl:comment

Page_Scope is processed after the XSL transformation. You will have to put page_scope based if-else check in External rather than in XSL.

So is there anyway of accessing any variables I set in my controller, from within the page layout? And by access, i mean, use in a conditional xsl statement.

Back to basics - the issue i am trying to solve: I want to have concatenated and compressed versions of js and css used on the runtime. but the full versions of all files used within teamsite. Because i still want developers to be able to make changes to their source css/js file and see immediately within teamsite.

the other issue is that some pages have different resources.

Probably you can have a task in your workflow which does the minification of the js and css and deploy them to runtime.
