Teamsite 6.7.2 on Windows Server 2003 upgrade

Hi,

I've an Teamsite 6.7.2, running on Windows Server 2003 and like to upgrade OS to Windows Server 2008.

What's the best way to do it?

I'm thinking the following possible ways.

1. Install Teamsite on new Win 2008 Server, then migrate the previous teamsite contents to it.

As I know, this would have license issue, that I can't have 2 production licenses at same time.

2. Or directly in-place upgrade the Win 2003 Server, keep teamsite contents unchanged.

Anyone can share their experience?

The problem is that your current TeamSite version isn't supported on Windows 2008 (it's actually also EOL). That means that option #2 is basically not applicable.

For option #1, you'd be looking at upgrading both the OS and your TeamSite platform. That would involve more effort than you currently assume, since you'd have to regression test and quite likely upgrade some or all of your code.

As far as licensing, HP is usually flexible as far as upgrades go. They may allow you to temporarily exceed your licensing alotment with the expectation that your old server gets retired once the upgrade process is completed. Talk to your HP rep.

Option #3: Upgrade TeamSite on the current system to a version that both (a) is supported and (b) supports the desired OS - then upgrade the OS.

Do I recommend this?

If you're talking about a production server - no.

If you're talking about a development server - maybe, though I prefer the fresh-install-on-new-server-and-migrate (FIONSAM) approach better.

The FIONSAM approach allows you to do a number of things that will generally take time (in the short-term) and save a lot of time, if done right (in the long-term) - such as verifying the stability of your backing store; fully vetting all your customizations, making sure you only bring over things that are being used, and when you bring them over make sure you have them [at least tersely] documented; consider cleaning up users / groups / roles - I'm particularly in favor of using TeamSite groups over OS groups and assigning roles to groups instead of individuals - if done right, it will make adding (and/or removing) users to the system much easier, and you can easily delegate the authority to do such things to trusted members of the groups or others.

That's just a short-list - but hopefully you get the idea - it's a lot easier to do that kind of full-review-and-cleanup if you are moving things to a new server.
