I have a search bar on a site I am developing. Does teamsite have an inbuild search functionality? I have been looking around the forums and different books, but all i could find was stuff about teams search functionality for content authors.

Yes, you are correct. Both the application is totally different. Only those functionality will work on your website that is developed or OOTB component added in your page. TeamSite search is only for authoring while website (Runtime) is a independent application. Although if there is IDOL implementation then there some OOTB components available for that searching that is again for search server.

So first you should revisit your requirement and use cases.

Teamsite Search is not meant to cater to websites. It is exclusively meant to handle searches within the Content Management store.

If you plan to use search for your website, please explore the options like endeca or IDOL. (Lucene or SOLR up to your choice)
