Help building tpl from dcr with iterator and nesting

Hoping somebody can help me understand, advise on the best/correct approcah and syntax to use for looping through and displaying results from DCRs. I already have my CFG setup and everything looks good in my capture form, though need help trying to understand and build my TPL files.

Small snippet of my .cfg

My .tpl below with Pseudocode which is where I need the help.

        another if else loop will be needed to loop through the images and captions:

Been up and down with this, had major problems with the compiler... after hours of trying to figure out what was wrong <iw_comment>...

I had some comments as  which was running some code casing errors.

Anyhow, slowly working through some code now and will post back when I have something to show, and yes, I've been looking/working through http://yourteamsite/iw/help/tst/pt quite intensively, though I'm not a hardcore coder, very hard to digest, hence me posting here Smiley Happy

Ok, I'll tackle a section at a time I think so things don't become over complicated.

After looking over the docs and speaking with a collegue I have the below code which should loop through the images and captions and display them, though when I run this code I get the error (An error occurred during PT compling.)

I'm not really sure if the var='image' is working, I read somewhere that you need a certain setup to use perl variables, as I say, still learning.

You have a few issues with your PT code - try this (not tested):

NOTE: You only need the CDATA directives if you made your PT strict-XML by having an <iw_pt name="..."> at the beginning and an </iw_pt> at the end -- instead just use <iw_pt name=..."/> at the begining or leave it out altogether (it isn't really needed)

You don't need iw_value tags nested within the iw_value tags -- that was probably most of the problem you had.

You seem to have a mismatch with the item name.

Also - if you have access to the shell - try using iwpt_compile.ipl (run with the '-h' flag for usage info, and look at the docs for examples of usage)

I also manged to fix the other issue, I was missing $

my $image      = iwpt_dcr_value('image.image');
my $caption    = iwpt_dcr_value('image.imagecaption')

I still have a bit of work to get through, currently setting up some new capture forms so I'll report back here if I need further assistance with the deeper nesting. Just doing a step at a time for now, see how it goes.

You're missing the iw_then container element within the above iw_if container element.

As for your other questions... play with it - you're getting paid to code this thing, you should have a sense of what the proper logic is to employ in various scenarios, so you should be able to figure out how to code it and then how to test / verify that it does what you want.

If you come across something that doesn't work and you're reasonably sure you coded for it - then post the details here and someone is likely to provide you the "second set of eyes" needed to figure out what's wrong -- but what you're asking for is very specific to your requirements and should be designed and implemented by you (or someone within your or your customer's organizaiton)

I should of mentioned, <iw_then> starts inside the file article-carousel.inc.php everything works if I past all the code directly on the page. Its only when I include the file that it stops working.

You didn't have a 'quote' field in the snippet of the DCT you posted a while back - but I'm guessing that it is a non-replicant text or textarea field - yes?

iwpt_dcr_list() would be the wrong directive to use to get / check it's value.

I think you'd need one more set of parentheses to enclose the entire expression that is within the double-quotes -- but since I believe most of the code there is wrong, I'm not sure it's worth worrying about that.

I think what you want is:

Correct. There will only ever be one of these, likewise with video, so what you say makes perfect sense, I was trying to get a list. I think iwpt_dcr_value( is what I need.

The additional_list will need dcr_list, this is the container for all the items, likewise for the gallery which loops through all the images. In our previous posts.

Currently doing some testing, nothing working as yet, I'll have to spend some good time trying to get a proper understanding of the diffrent directives with further testing.

The empty string and zero are not always equivalent
Wrong in that you were trying to extract a list from a non-replicant.

Help much appricated and sorry for ongoing thread, hopefully last problem with this.

If I change

You seem to have a problem distinguish a list (replicant) from an individual item (non-replicant) and how to treat them.

From your original posting of the DCT, the structure (simplified) is:

The perl-esque logic to process that structure (minus most of the HTML formatting) for the additional items is:

Keep in mind:

The value of an item is blank-or-not.
The count of a list is 0-or-more
Iteration over an empty list skips the inner code

Now you clearly have added more to your DCT than originally posted, things like quotes and videos, etc. but the logic shown above remains the same.
Think about the data structures and how you can traverse and unwrap them to generate the output you're looking for - and remember:

Simple items (not select lists, checkboxes, or radiobuttons) should be compared against the empty string
Lists should be compared against a number
Iterations over an empty list has an implied conditional wrapped around it such that the inner code is not executed if the list is empty, so you do not need to put an explicit conditional around an iteration.

With that in mind, try to write your PT again.
