Do you want to populate this in DCT? If yes, then use Dynamic Datasource(Refer the documents and you can find some dynamic data source examples)

your question is vague to me. I suppose that you want to dynamically set the options for the second dropdown based on the choosen value of the first dropdown. Right? So if value of the first dropdown is say 'France' your second dropdown should (magically) show 'paris', 'lyon' and 'strasbourg', etc.

This can not be done via 'external java'. (What exactly do you mean with external java?)

Second, do you want this magic to happen in a dcr or in a livesite-component? Or do you want this to happen on the website-frontend (e.g. livesite runtime?) For a dcr you should use formapi (see manual). Afaik, formapi does not work in a livesite-component.

yeah it's possible in component level. use ajax request url, for more information please refer the OOTB component ( Polling Component )

1. use external java with three method.

method one--> load the content for dropdown 1

method two ---> onchange the dropdown 1 value then invoke the ajax request at the same time pass the param value as a selected value to same java calss.

method three --> onchange of second dropdown value to method three and populate the content.

use this ajax request without your page reload you can call your external java class any no of time.

for more information just verify with pooling component.

if yes can you give an example how to extract data from text/xml files using dynamic data source call.

You need to write perl program/java to get the value from xml or from any other source. Concatenate the three values(Country,State and city) by any value either #,$, etc and return it to DCT.

Now write the Callserver method passing the required parameter(first parameter would be the ipl that you will write) and then get the concatenated value in the DCT. (Refer the Formapi Guide.)

Split the value with that you will receive in the concatenation form. Set the individual value in the dropdown by using setoption() method.

Hope this will solve your issue.

Um.. your concatenation/splitting of values seems like a cop-out for avoiding having to write this in a properly extensible and value-safe way. All the tools are there to properly structure and fetch your data -- there's no reason for this serialization to occur. Still, there's a handful of 'good' ways to write this, and the 'right' one depends on more context information than OP provided (in this case, it mainly depends on the data complexity and volume). Nipper pointed out the location of the relevant documentation; OP is going to have to give it a try and then be more specific about the problem if she/he wants more pointed help. Otherwise, by guessing at the requirements we're likely to send them down a sub-optimal path.
