Not getting the total count in widget.getTotalItems()

I am doing a search in teamsite but I cant see the page navigation. I found the reason as widget.getTotalItems() is return -1 in pagination_renderer.jsp file. How to get the total number of search items?

I already filed a bug on this (about a month or two ago) - but who knows when it will actually be fixed...
