Identify device type

We do not have the mobile module enabled and would like to know if there is a way to get the device type of the current user, primarily if its a desktop or a mobile phone.

I have a requirement to redirect users to a mobile site if the users are mobile users. The users would be redirected to different mobile sites for different URLs. I am thinking of creating a new page controller and pass the target url as a parameter to the page. So when the user access the page, the controller directs the user to mobile site reading that parameter.

You can always get the user's browser information via context.getUserAgent() or context.getRequest().getHeader("User-Agent"). You can then compare it against a database like this one. There's no "isMobile()" method until you build it.

I already did some research on UserAgent and found that not every browser/device gives same info and would require taking care of a lot of cases. I can look more into it but atleast got my confirmation that there is no method.

Does the approach of using a page controller sound reasonable? Thinking of having a parameter for that controller to specify the target mobile URL. The redirect is based on different vanity URLs. so once the vanity URL redirects the user to a specific .page, if a user adds a page controller to a .page, it will redirect them to the target mobile URL.

A page controller is the right place to do redirects (at least, those that need data from LiveSite). Aside from that, it's all about what makes sense for your use case and your authors, so it sounds like you've got that covered.
