MetaData Capture

I looked in the archived post but did not find anything to address this. I have need to use the metadata capture forms in Teamsite. My problem is that it only supports one column going straight down. This becomes a problem when you need to have many metadata fields. Any ideas? Two columns or more would be nice? Any hacks to get this to work? I can't be the only one that has come across this?

Can you implement a metadata capture system using DCRs instead of extended attributes (associate each non-templated file with a DCR generated from a new metadata DCT, add corresponding metadata fields to all templates - probably on the first or last page, use inlines for the shared data, I am not sure how this works with DataDeploy).

Only problem with this is that the content is not created using templates. It is for our portal integration effort and most of the content is already existing. Things like doc, xls, pdf, html files. I can't believe that they would have designed the UI like that?

I understand, but you can still set up a system to capture metadata related to binary and other non-templated files with a DCT.

Yes, the UI is like that. In fact that's what templating looked like before 5.x.

Can you explain this? I don't understand how you would relate the DCR to the actual content.

You can do it implicitly (the path to the document [relative to the workarea] matches the location of the dcr [relative to templatedata/category/type/data], or you can set extended attributes on the document that tell the system what category, type and DCR are associated with the document. Then use a custom "metadata" menu item to allow this DCR to be edited when the file is selected. Then have workflow associate the DCR with the job whenever a file is workflowed.

I have a similar scenario where I need to set metadata to pdf, doc..etc., which are not associated to any datatype. Basically the system will contain documents instead of dcrs. Is there a way to set metadata on such documents which have no dcr associated?

That's OOTB functionality. Metadata setting is not limited to DCRs.

Check TeamSite® Administration Guide, Chapter "Configuring Metadata Capture".
Basically, you can Tag anything you want, MDCT Forms and how to apply them are
defined by you. Main configurations are iwhome/local/config/datacapture.cfg and
iwhome/local/config/metadata-rules.cfg
