Doing Get Latest on templates/compontents while preserving content

Hi

Is there any possibility of preserving the original content of the component while I do Get Latest on the pages.

Say, I am referring to a abc.dcr when I create the component, but in the page i am changing it to a xyz.dcr. So when I make changes to the master copy of the component and do get latest in the page, the xyz.dcr gets changed to abc.dcr.

Is there any way, I can preserve the xyz.dcr while still getting the latest component changes..

I see this as an issue because I have to do this on 2000+ pages.. Please help

The issue is when we have these components in the template and do Get Latest on the template. The content is retained when we have the component alone in the page.. Is there any way we can still get the latest template on the pages still preserving the original content of the page..?? TIA.

I think this is a very known issue, when ever you are changing the DCR from abc to xyz you need to save the page by previewing it. This will save it and retain the DCR when you try editing the page again.

I am assuming that you are talking about one component which is DCR based and this component is included in the template. LEt me know if this works.

Thanks lilleywhite for your time. I think I wasnt clear explaining the requirement. We have a example.template in which we have three components. Comp1, Comp2 and Comp3. In this Comp2 will refer to abc.dcr. This Comp2 is being used in a page,pqr.page, but is referring to a different dcr, say xyz.dcr. Now when I make changes in the appearance XSLT of Comp2 and do the get latest on the example.template first, the changes reflect well in the template.

Now when I do the GET Latest on the pqr.page for the xslt changes to take place, the content in the Comp2 in this page is coming from abc.dcr, which is the default dcr set while creating the component.

Understand this is a normal behavior of the template. But I have a requirement, where the content in the Comp2 should not get overlayed to abc.dcr and should come from xyz.dcr while the changes i made in the appearance XSLT should happen.

How did you define your datum for the DCR component. I am sure that your path to the DCR is hard coded to abc.dcr. No matter what you have done in your appearance xml, the datum at the page level is always pointing to abc.dcr, because it might be hard coded. One has to manually change that for it to reflect.

On the contrary what you can do is change your datum to point to xyz.dcr and the do a getLatest at template level, then submit the template to stage. Then you can do the getLatest at the page level. How many pages you were trying to change here. If i were you, i would do it for fewer pages.

We have many such dcrs.. and not just abc or xyz. Thats the issue here. If we had only one dcr then it would had been much easier for us like you said..

The content of the pages (within components) is not preserved when you do a Get Latest. It is similar to the "Overwrite" option available to you when you receive alerts to update the components while editing a page.

This is a very common issue. For components which are often updated, the component design must have used externalized XSLs to counter this maintainability effort which I am afraid you'll have to put in to manually update your pages now.

may be this not a good solution. as we are using this approach,instead of going DCR datum to read the file use external java class to read the DCR dynamically.

we have country based site. each country have different DCR for Header section using external java class to read the DCR based on locale.
