Extracting XMP metadata

We're using the XMPmapping.xml config file to read and write custom metadata fields that we're embedding into images on ingest/download.

We've noticed that when this metadata has been added to the asset using Adobe Bridge, the metadata fails to appear on ingest. This is not the case when it has been written using other tools such as Photoshop, or when it has been previously embedded by MediaBin.

It's also known that Bridge will append a new XMP packet in an image, rather than add any metadata modifications to the existing header. Is it possible then that there's an incompatibility at play here with the xmp mapping functionality in MediaBin?

We are on MB 4.5.3 Build 15 - the Adobe version involved in our workflow is CS6.
