Whats the maximum size MB can support?

Hi,

Is there any limits on the number of assets or the total size of assets that MB can support? I have nearly 3TB of assets and wondering whether MB can able to handle it. I am sure there will be issues when I try to import these to MB.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi John-

There really isn't a limit to the # of assets in MediaBin. And it can definately handle 3 TB of assets. That is well within the "comfort zone" of the system (depending on your infrastructure, of course). I know of a number of customers that have sizes well north of that. A lot depends on how much metadata you have, how the assets are organized (i.e. folder structure) and permissions.

Do you have an estimated # of assets? If you are looking at millions (ok, 500k+ to be conservative) then you might need to look at some tuning and organizational best practices to keep performance at a good level, but if you are looking at a couple hundred thousand or less then you should be fine.

The total number of assets are around 400K to 500K. There is not much custom metadata that I am using right now. When you have mentioned on tuning, is it on MB server level or just the folder structure level? Is there anything we can do on the MB server configurations to support large number of assets. Also, is there any best practices/guides available other than the manuals for MB?

Excessive use of folders or custom permissions at each folder level may cause some performance issues depending on operations you are performing. However this is unlikely to be noticed. In most cases this would be specific to search performance and deleted items cleanup. Excessive revision history for large numbers of assets may cause performance issues, but may be addressed with some database tuning.

If you experience slow database performance, support can be engaged for database evaluation and performance tuning.

We have 2.7 million assets totalling over 100TB.

In 4.6 certain operations were slow e.g. browsing folders but I think version 8 which uses the IDOL database handles the large numbers better.

Depending on your license, your organization may be limited in the amount of assets it is licensed to be maintained and indexed in MediaBin/IDOL. You might want to check that.

Also something to consider is datacenter migrations. Storage migration becomes a big issue when getting over 1-2TB. It can take weeks/months to get all the asset storage moved and the need to play the role "conductor of the orchestra" in this case take a lot of planning and downtime.

With regard to this, we found that splitting the MBDatadirectory into more manageable chunks of 1 TB (having a Primary, then multiple Secondary) to help negate some downtime of the whole system. We try to keep the Primary no more than 2TB large. Consult MediaBin documentation for how to do this.
