Usage of PathSpecification

Theres something really strange happening in one of my deployments.
Im doing a Temasite area comparison deployment ( the areas on my case are editions ). Im also specifying a path in the PathSpecification section of my deployment config file ... im also attaching my deployment config file.

Some part of my deployment ( i have multiple deployment definations ) is failing and when i look into the logs i get the following error:

What does this mean:

ERROR: Error locating /iwmnt/default/main/scb2bex_r3_appl/EDITION/ed_0002/application/pb/xml/.

Ive checked this path and it exists ..... why is OpenDeploy saying that it cant find it ?

Theres more ..... when i do a 2nd deployment which based on the same editions and pathspecification path just different target path, it works fine and all the files are deployed.

What could be the problem when the first deployment runs ? Does OpenDeploy have problem running multiple deployment definations in a single deployment config file like mine ?

Maybe if you posted your command line that showed the parameters you passed in for the substitution variables it would be of more help. This should be a no brainer whenever you are looking for help on an OD config that has substitution variables.

This is the command:

/space/iw-home/OpenDeployNG/bin/iwodstart scb-b2b_pss_appl -k base_edition=/iwmnt/default/main/scb2bex_r3_appl/EDITION/ed_0002 -k latest_edition=/iwmnt/default/main/scb2bex_r3_appl/EDITION/ed_0003 -V verbose

where base_edition & latest_edition are the two editions which OpenDeploy will use during the comparison deployment.

The strange thing is that when the deployment occurs through the workflow, sometimes it works and most of the time only some parts of the deployment work. But when i retry the same deployment from command line the whole deployment is successful.

Theres another thread in the 'Content Distribution' forum by the name of 'OpenDeploy Comparing failure' reporting the exact problem as this .... you could look into that to get more on this scenario.....

I'm not sure of the exact reason for the error you are seeing - but I can tell you that you have specifications within your deployment configuration file which are not supported.

You have multiple source areas deploying to the same target area with doDeletes="yes" enabled on some of them - and all the deployments are running concurrently.

I suggest you change your config file to use distinct target areas for the source areas or disable doDeletes for all such deployments.

Yes i noticed that and turned dodeletes off and also turned off the transactional deployment off with the same results as before.

One observation is that if i dont specify a path in the pathspecification section, everthing works fine. But my requirement is such that i have to deploy different files from the edition comparison to different locations on same servers and some on different servers.

FYI:
Platform: UNIX
TS version: 5.5.2
OpenDeploy version: 5.5.1

I havent installed SP 2 for OD 5.5.1 can that be an issue ?

If theres no solution to this issue, the work around for me is to re structure the content in my workarea so that i dont require to set the pathspecification section and probably use filters instead.

What do you think ?

As I recall (feel free to refresh my memory ;-) - you had distinct definitions, each one with a single pathSpecification element - but you also had multiple source areas appearing to deploy to the same target areas (I didn't notice if they were going to different machines)

Can you provide a simple list of source/target[/host] pairings that you need to deploy to - something like:

/tmp/foo -> /www/foo (host-A)
/tmp/foo -> /www/foo (host-B)
/tmp/bar -> /www/foo (host-A)
...

That would make it easier to discuss strategies without having to parse through the entire deployment configuration file again (which you say you've changed since you previously posted it).

Let me try to give you the exact context.

Im doing a edition comparison deployment. The two editions for OpenDeploy to compare is being supplied as arguments to the deployment config file:

I have 6 distinct deployments in my file and all of them are using the same editions the only difference is the path specified in the pathspecification section of each deployment. This is what makes all deployments different from each other.

You can view it as trying to deploy different chunks of the result of the edition comparison to different locations.

Target for all deployments is the same machine ( that is the teamsite server ).

Here is the breif summary of these 6 deployments ive cut out from my deployment config file:

It NOT a transactional deploy ( whereas this is a requirement for me as well ).

This is the editions supplied to the deployment config file from the IPL file that starts the deployment:

Latest edition path: '/iwmnt/default/main/scb2bex_r3_appl/EDITION/ed_0003'

The following is my deploy command:

This is what happens in the sender log of one of my deployments:

ERROR: Error locating /iwmnt/default/main/scb2bex_r3_appl/EDITION/ed_0002/application/pb/xml/.

Heres the same messge from another of the deployments:
ERROR: Error locating /iwmnt/default/main/scb2bex_r3_appl/EDITION/ed_0002/application/billing/xml/.

But when i actually go to these directories .... they exists !!!

Now you tell me whats going on ..... ive tried everything thinking that ive done something wrong but to no avail.. now ive started to think the other way around that theres something wrong with OpenDeploy ( I havent installed the any service packs for OD 5.5.1 could that be an issue ??? ) ...... im sitting right on major deadline with this issue coming up ...... please help me in diagnosing this problem

I think you should be Saying EDITIONS instead of EDITION. EDITIONS is plural.
so try
the following statements
Base EDITION path: '/iwmnt/default/main/scb2bex_r3_appl/EDITIONS/ed_0002'
Latest EDITION path: '/iwmnt/default/main/scb2bex_r3_appl/EDITIONS/ed_0003'

No - EDITION is correct - that is the name of the directory.
