Early termination of workflow

Is there a way to terminate the workflow early so it doesn't complete rendering, but can display an error to the user? For example, if the user selects the 'delete' option, there are certain branches this function doesn't apply to. If the user is in one of those branches, I do not want to render the workflow input form with the error across the top, I would rather just pop up a page with the error message and a cancel button. Can this be done? If so, how do I go about doing this?

I'd add "... if the user [color=red]selects the 'delete' option ...[/color]" to the list of things that require further clarification.

Well first off, the delete I'm talking about is when the user selects a delete function from the file menu. This kicks off a custom workflow. However that delete function doesn't apply to some branches...but the option is still available in the file menu and that isn't going to change. Rather than the delete workflow form displaying for the user to fill in and submit only to have the delete not do anything, I don't want to display the form for them to fill out, I want to display them a message saying the delete function does not apply to this branch and give them an option to cancel out.
