Can we place Java files externally

Hi All,

Thanks in advance , basically I am new to Java , so please forgive my innocence.

I am on TS 7.3.2 , Soloris . and I have a question

Can we place our custon Java files at some location other than in "/content_center/customer_src/src/com" , The reason why I am asking this , as in when we do changes to the Java file we run the make_toolkit.ipl that results a downtime at iwui.

Just to avoid this can we put in some other location compile the class file and use it.

What you're looking for is a feature called "hot deploy", which isn't available until 8.0 (it might be there in 7.5?).

Until then, the approach to minimizing downtime is to compile your classes externally (in your IDE) into a JAR file. The "normal" process is to then drop your jar file in customer_src/lib and run make_toolkit.ipl, but for development purposes, you can simply replace it in the AppContainer folder structure and bounce the JBoss service. Yes there's still downtime, but it should be less than half of what you're currently experiencing.

Yes . You can create a folder under root(say home) having read write execute access to yourself.Place the java code there.I mean your build jar files.Not the raw .java files

Then from command line(putty) run your code.

Basically it looks something like

x->path of your installed java dir

..x/java/bin/java -classpath /home/folder_name/* :

testcode param1 param2 param3

where, testcode=your java class name

param1,param2,param3= parameters if any passsed to your javacode

The other option is to move the Java to a new JVM. We spun up a new Tomcat instance for CSSDK, have the WF URL task point to that new instance and all the processing is done there.

The other thing you really should do is to build the JAR outside of the iwhome. You can compile it anywhere with an IDE, a tool like Maven or by using make_toolkit with special parameters. Even if you load the jar into iwhome, it still guarantees that the UI will startup because there will be no Java errors.

This only works if your code is standalone, and not something like a workflow task or a custom UI screen. It also doesn't offer any advantages over using an actual IDE.

Thats right . But this will give flexibilty to run that custom code by n no. of users. Most of time my custom cssdk code goes like this.That said, yes it can't be used in a workflow task..

Now it goes to requirement of the person how he wants to use.

Yeah , as pointed out rightly by rpoulin, we wanted to acheive something for our Workflows, Looks like even if we get back our copiled code back to TeamSite , resart of UI services is Inevitable.

Not inevitable. You can spin up a VM with tomcat to run CSSDK, and point your workflow code to it. It is really not that hard. Then point your external tasks to this instance.

All you need to do it redirect the URL task.

It is, by default, http://$IW_SERVER:$IW_PORT/iw-cc/urlexternaltask

You can change that (or remap it in iw-webd.conf)

You will need ot have CSSDK loaded on the other VM, and build a Spring MVC dispatcher servlet.

One common mistake is people think you need to use the SOAP interface, not true, the Java interface will work over to another server (but only 1, for mulitple you need SOAP)
