Open Deploy Rcvr 6.1.1 in Windows 2012 R2

Hi,

Our application/web servers are finally moving to Windows 2012 R2 and I want to know if the OD rcvr 6.1.1 is compatible with Windows 2012 R2. Also, the Teamsite server is probably going to reside in windows 2003 itself.

In case there are any known issues and workarounds/solutions, please do share them. Also, will there be any issue if the OD base (Teamsite server) is in windows 2003 and the OD Rcvr is in 2012 R2?

Certainly not supported. It may work but I would doubt it. You are likely the first to try it. 6.1.1 was released in 2007 or so and there are many things that can go wrong here.

Thanks Andy. Yea, I dont think my org. is really worried about not having a support (as we are still operating on TS 6.7.1). However, if I'm not given an option at all, are there any instructions/steps/precautions that I can take to make this work at all?

I will get a windows 2012 R2 server to try out the install (probably at the end of April).

Like he said, you're likely to be the first to try it, so there's not going to be any documentation on the subject.

An older ODBase should be able to deploy into a newer ODRcvr. You'll have to test it out, but that's probably your best option.

Thanks rpoulin, this is the workaround we were discussing today (going for newer version of ODRcvr). And I was about to ask the question for which you already answered "old OD Base should be able to communicate with newer OD Rcvr". I was not sure about this. Thanks a lot. I will try it out.

Is it possible to suggest what OD Rcvr version should we consider for our situation? (7.1/7.2/7.3)

If this is a trail and error thingy, I will then start with 7.1 version.

I think only 7.4 and 7.5 support Win 2012.

One of the manuals, maybe a datasheet, but I doubt it.

That being said, not supported doesn't mean it won't work. It certainly may but you are on your own.

we are anyway using an un-supported version of Teamsite and I'm thinking that we would be fine with an un-supported version of OD Rcvr. Now, I have another update that my destination servers are going to be on cloud. Will this make any difference for installation of OD Rcvr (we will probably go for 7.2) on Non-Cloud servers and Cloud servers?

I'm not sure if I'm asking this correct, but:

if we take out windows 2012 from the discussion, does OD Rcvr generally work the same way in Cloud servers as in non-Cloud servers?

Generally yes, OD won't care where your server is physically located. However, most cloud services make the networking part difficult by dynamically assigning IPs or putting security restrictions on incoming connections. The OD Rcvr shouldn't care one way or the other, but your OD Base may have a hard time aiming at a moving target(s).

if the ips are dynamically assigned, how does ODBase deploy to the recievers properly? is the solution not to assign dynamic ips? or is there a way to work around this problem?

OD standard deployments do not work well in the cloud concept.

You can have a static server, with an shared disk, push content to the shared disk and the cloud servers mount the disk when they startup.

Even if you were creative and figured out a way to have OD start up and use specific hostnames, servers starting up would start up without content. They have to have a place they can go with preloaded content.

FYI, there is a licensing concern with my approach. OD has a "network share" receiver license which you woul dneed to purchase to do this. On the plus side, you have a single server pushing to a number of receivers with a single instance.

I guess the question is whether you're using an elastic cloud, which causes all the issues nipper is talking about. Elastic cloud services are really best used with self-contained webapps that pull content from a shared location (e.g. a database). That's why if you can put all your content on a network share, that problem mostly goes away.

If you have a fixed number of servers which are not going to be moving around very much, then the problem might be lessened to a manual reconfig and content sync activity every now and then.

we do have fixed number of servers. So, I dont think we are using elastic cloud. And also I got an update on ip address provisioning. They say that ip address and the hostnames remain the same unless the deployment is teared down. I'm still waiting to get more clarity on this, but does this give any indication that the ip address is going to be static?

Also, this could be the dumbest question, but I want to ask anyway

Can you please confirm if this is the right understanding on Open Deploy:

Open Deploy must have an ip address specified to be able to deploy content. If we just mention the host name/alias, it will not be able to deploy the content

is this correct?

The OpenDeploy server / service (sender & receiver) uses the IP address as a component of its licensing & as a means of determining the target (sender-to-receiver) and/or source (receiver-from-sender) of the deployment process.

So - you're mostly correct.

Hostnames and aliases are fine as long as that always resolve to the same IP address.

I contacted the Teamsite support team and asked them how the licensing works. And they came back saying that the license is not tied up with ip address and it is tied to a host name. So, even if the ip address of a server change and the host name remains the same, looks like the license is still valid. Also, I'm guessing that if I use the hostname in my odnodes.xml and/or in my deployment scripts, they should continue to work fine even if the ip address change. Does it sound right?

I'm surprised that the license doesn't tie itselt to either the IP address or MAC address somehow - though considering that they don't prompt for that information in the license form, and oft times would not be able to perform a lookup to retrieve that information, it makes sense.

The odnodes.xml thing has always been flexible - the only issue is how your network resolves the 'host' attribute value - and whether you enable strictPartnerChecking.
