Using Targeting in .NET with RulesBase control

I am trying to set up Targeting on a .NET platform. I am using "TeamSite SiteDeveloper Guide 7.3 rev1" as a reference and I'm perplexed as to what value should be passed to the RulesBase .NET control for the RulesXsl parameter.

Environment:
TeamSite 7.3.2 on W2K8
LSDS .NET runtime on W2K8
LSCS on W2K8

Following is example from documentation:

I tried putting various values within the <RulesXml/> with no success. Does anyone know what should be passed?

Some examples of what I tried (NOTE: everything in <RulesXml/> is entity-escaped -- the < and > entities are translating after I post):

I haven't used the .NET stuff yet, so I don't know this for a fact, but based on conventions elsewhere in the product you probably want to be treating the XSL as a string, rather than subelements of the current XML document:

Not sure if that's what you tried (you alluded to escaping entities), but AFAIK this is how it is *meant* to work.. you might have a secondary problem elsewhere though -- content encoding perhaps?

Not needed within CDATA. It might be the equivalent of what OP has already tried though, since (I think?) he might've tried escaping all the XML characters in his/her RulesXsl value.

As far as I can tell, the engine seems to be expecting a literal string, meaning that it would use something like new InputSource(new StringReader(dom4jdoc.element("RulesXsl").getText())).. So the format I posted should be right, meaning that maybe the error is with something like content encoding or a typo in the XSL...

I did try with XSL entity-escaped within the <RulesXsl/> element (it was unescaping on post of message). It's possible, though, that I had it malformed in which case it's a matter of getting it formatted correctly. I will run a few more tests and post results.

Regarding the exception itself and the transformToString() method, there is a FileDal referenced in the arguments so I wasn't sure whether it was expecting some kind of XSL filepath that it would resolve.

The FileDal is only used for the URI resolver, when you use an xsl:include for a path with http://www.interwoven.com/custom or http://www.interwoven.com/livesite. Your execution doesn't get that far.

Well, I again ran multiple tests trying to get XSL into that <RulesXsl/> element without any success. I used entity-escaping, I tried it unescaped with CDATA, I tried with and without the leading DOCTYPE declaration, I tried an include, I tried a simple template match "/" with nothing in it, all to no avail.

This is valid XSL I'm using so I don't believe it's an error there. Like I mentioned, if it's an empty node (i.e. <RulesXsl></RulesXsl>) the controller executes but there is no formatting of the response.

Interestingly if I put empty CDATA it also throws same exception e.g. <RulesXsl><![CDATA[]]></RulesXsl>.

Well that much makes sense, because [empty string] is not valid XSL Smiley Happy

Not sure what else to suggest, aside from content encoding (make sure what you're submitting is valid UTF-8)

Received answer on proper formatting. The inner-content of <RulesXsl/> should be an unescaped XSL stylesheet.

I tried this originally but I probably had a syntax error or something and, when that didn't work, just went down the wrong path of trying to escape the XML where I was just wasting time trying various methods.
