Is it possible to maintain some DCT templates in a separate XML files? I want to ensure that we can just change those templates without touching templating.cfg.

Read about DCT's "inline" callout, search Forum for inline. There are quite a few threads where that is discussed.

Follow the process below:

1. Create another XML file for maintaining "categories/data-type".
2. Upload / edit newly created XML file under "<iw-home>/local/config" folder.
3. Edit and make the following entry in templating.cfg
a. <!ENTITY give_any_name SYSTEM "/apps/iw-home/local/config/your_filename.xml">
b. Add "&give_any_name;" before closing of </templating> tag

Remember: Any time you make change in XML file it is mandate to either touch / edit templating.cfg, so that necessary changes can take place on server.

Well said, just to add one more point here,any time i update the new formed xml i need to edit templating.cfg or save it again on the server.
