Performance issue in TS 7.3.2

Hi,

We migrated from TS 7.1 to TS 7.3.2

We noted that there is a particular "imp_image" folder which has 10,355 files in direct folder level and 51,151 files in total including sub-directories.

When this folder is clicked and before response is rendered to users for "imp_image", if the user randomly clicks other folders performance of the server becomes slow for all users at that point of time

Teamsite starts hanging

When this folder is clicked the response time of UI becomes slow and affects the performance of other users and other requests too . CPU and memory reaches very high levels especially that of jboss process

This is one of your folders? In a branch?

First, you should generally never have more than 1000 file entries (files and directories) within a single directory, better if you stick to 500 or less.

Secondly, you need to make sure you don't have "show All" selected, and instead have it set to 'show 100' (or whatever the value is) so that TeamSite doesn't try to render a list of more than 100 files at a time.

Find some way to break up the structure and/or make sure that 'show All' isn't selected.

Thanks for the response. It is set to Show:100.
User does not accept with splitting the folder and claims that the same folder with same amount of contents did not cause any performance issue in TS 7.1

Is there any tuning of memory possible

there are some cache configuration settings in iw.cfg plus you can adjust the java settings for jboss

Cache size is 30000 in iw.cfg guess that should be ok.

Is there any specific range for setting java heap and memory.

According to my understanding when response time for one user is high the performance of other users should not be affected as it is multi threaded.

Any clue why the entire performance of the server goes down

I doubt 30000 is a large enough cache:

From the Admin manual:

The initial cache size setting should be approximately three times the number of files and directories on the largest branch

Now is that the issue ? Maybe not.

You can also change the JAVA_OPTS in Interwoven/ApplicationContainer/bin/iw_jboss_run.conf

We use -Xms2048M -Xmx2048m

I seem to recall that there was some "maximum value" for that setting, but don't recall, off the top-of-my-head, what it was.

Technical note.. JBoss in 7.x is the 32bit version, which means you can only assign a maximum memory space of 4GB. In reality, the various JVMs have much lower limits because of OS restrictions around allocating contiguous memory sections and whatnot, so the limits are actually more like 1.5GB on Windows and 1.8GB on Linux. Setting values higher than this usually get ignored, but you probably shouldn't just in case Java tries to allocate more memory than is possible.

TSv8 is supposedly going to be all 64bit, so this limit will no longer apply (well, actually, is going to be so high that it won't realistically be a problem for a very long time).

Wanted to check if the access logs in the below format state time in seconds or milliseconds

100 - refers to second or milliseconds , please help

Not sure - you'd have to find the configuration file that defines the logging format directives.

If it's %D, then it's the time taken to serve the request, in microseconds.
If it's %T, then it's the time taken to serve the request, in seconds

The format options can be found in http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_log_config.html#formats

Personally, I very rarely look at this log, and so have had no reason to determine that format.

Thanks for the info . Users are complaining that preview was much faster in TS 7.1 than in TS 7.3.2
