How to extend User Profile Data Model ?

Hi ,

 

 I am  trying to explore how  to extend User Profile Data Model in SP/LiveSite and how to  add  extra data type  locale in it and fetch its value so that site will get redirect based on the  registered locale  in User Profile. I gone through guide but topic is still not much clear .Kindly suggest steps for the same.
