Program to automate the designing of DCT
anilgkumar
Anyone so far thought for this?
If yes, please share your inputs also.
I'm going to start developing a program in Perl/Java to build datacapture.cfg, complying to datacapture6.0.dtd
Regards,
Anil

So many people thought of it, many have implemented it and there is one or 2 codes rotating in forms and online.
requirements vary from Project to Project and the changes frm one datatype to and other are very very granular , so a perl based DCT generator is not a big help unless it is a very big project and large number of DCTs are needed.

I thought about this once, when a client wanted business users to be able to modify their forms via a friendly GUI. It sounds fine in theory until you start to consider how much business logic is almost always required in FormAPI, and then the whole concept falls apart. Adding a new item is only a tiny fraction of the complexity of forms creation, and frankly, posting the DTD reference on your cubicle wall is about as useful and much less effort
Not saying it wouldn't be cool to build such a thing, but I think its usefulness in the real world would only be academic at best.

There was a
presentation at GearUp 2006
that, among other things, presented a means of using a spreadsheet to detail all the requirements for the DCTs and an inline script to generate the DCT on-the-fly from the specifications in the spreadsheet.
Again, it was based on the requirements of the customer's implementation and might not fit all customer requirements, plus it required that the person(s) filling out the spreadsheet knew what they were doing ...
