Disassociate page from template AFTER creation?

Back in 2009 someone posted this question was asked without any response. I'm trying again.

Can a page created with a template be disassociated from the template anywhere other than in the "new page" form? Specifically after it's been edited, pushed to production, lived there for a while then someone wants to remove a component that is part of the template, but only for this page.

There isn't any way for users to do it through the UI, unless you give them a custom menu option in CCPro or something like that. Basically, there's no difference between a page that was created with individual components, and one that was created and disassociated from a template. So with that in mind, your custom menu option would have to (these are xpaths below; and this is probably unsupported)
* locate the ID of the template in /Page/PageTemplates/PageTemplate
* remove /Page/PageTemplates/PageTemplate[@ID=$id]
* set TemplateComponentID=0 where /Page/Page_Content/Component[@PageID=$id]
* set PageID=0 where /Page/Page_Content/Component[@PageID=$id]
