MediaBin assets migration from 4.6.2 to 8.1

Hi,

We are planning to upgrade Mediabin from 4.6.2 to 8.1.
I am confident of installation, but not sure about migrating existing assets/user permissions from old to new MediaBin.
I don't find any document related to asset migration and upgrade steps in installation document is not so helpful.
Can any one help me in sending the migration script/document.
Our existing MB database is Oralce 11G. And plannig to install 8.1 in MS SQL.
Will there be any issues? please suggest.

Please note that we are trying to insall MB 8.1 in brand new 2008 boxes and not in existing 4.6.2 2003 boxes

This can be done but I suggest taking ProServices/Support help during this migration.

Build a fresh 8.1 server and make sure everything (upload/download) works. Restore the 4.6.2 Database on 8.1 Database. You need to update the ServerID value in Windows registry by taking the value from MBSettings table of restored database.

Run Upgrade_Schema.sql from SQL folder under MediaBin Server installation folder.

Run the third party installer again to update the MBSettings table with the installation paths.

Also, IDOL indexing needs to be scheduled by running two .sql (MarkAll and scheduleIDOLIndexing) files from SQL folder.

I have prepared two options of MediaBin upgrade. can you please recommoned which option is better?

Option 1#

1. Copy 4.6.2 database/data into new empty database schema created for 8.1
2. Run Upgrade_Schema.sql
3. Copy ImageDB to new box where 8.1 server would be installed
4. Install 8.1 MB
5. Point 8.1 ImageDB to 4.6.2 copied ImageDB
6. update the ServerID value in Windows registry

Option 2#

1. install 8.1 freshly with new database
2. Test the installation
3. Restore the 4.6.2 Database on 8.1
4. Update the ServerID value in Windows registry
5. Run Upgrade_Schema.sql from SQL
6. Run the third party installer again to update the MBSettings table with the installation paths
7. Running two .sql (MarkAll and scheduleIDOLIndexing)

I always prefer the second option and easier to do the migration and fix the issues if any.

We would like to install IDOL in seperate box as that of MB server. Do youd see any issues with this ? I mean w.r.t MB 8.1. Installation document from autonomy prepared in such a way that it assumes that IDOL is installed in same box as that of MB asset server.

You can install IDOL Server on a different box from MediaBin Server.

A row needs to be added to MBSettings table with Setting_name as IDOLServer and Setting_value as IDOLServerHostName.

There should not be any issues when IDOL Server is running on a different machine.

Upgrade_Schema.sql from SQL folder is for SQL SERVER DB i believe.

We are using ORACLE DB.

UpgradeMediaBinObjects.sql is the upgrade schema file for oracle? (its under oracle folder)

i was able to successfully upgrade MB from 4.6 to 8.1 successfully in DEV env.

one issue i have noticed that IDOL is recognizing old files. There are around 10000 files, but it shows only 4.

These 4 i have uploaded before data migration/restore.

I ran two IDOL index sqls. i am i still missing anything?

Search is not working since indexing was not properly set to older documents. Only newly added documents are coming up in search.
What might be the reason?

older documents are being indexed in IDOL after i rerun the IDOX SQLS and restarting IDOL and MB Services.

Hi,

IDOL summary metadata field was not part of 4x.

After asset migration from 4x to 8x, i have noticed that IDOL summary metadata field is populated with proper metadata for all the assets.

i wonder how this happened automatically? is it due to two IDOL index SQLs which i ran (MarkAllForIDOLIndexing.sql and ScheduleIDOLIndexing.sql) ? or any other reason?

IDOL Summery metadata field is started from MediaBin 7.x versions. This will be generated just before IDOL indexing on MediaBin 7.x and 8.x versions.

Yes, this field was populated since you ran the IDOL reindexing.

i have a question regarding DB restore while performing upgrade of assets/data from 4x to 8x.

If we modify server ID in register entry in 8.1 server by taking it from the 4x DB, will there be any issues with functionality of 4x server, since both the instances (4x and 8x) will have same server ID.

Our old version will be used by users til the new MB is live.

we are now testing the MB 8.1 installation in dev environmet with production data.

Hence wanted to make sure there won't be any impact to exisitng production MB.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Migration between Oracle and SQL is not covered in the install guide. You should open a support ticket for assistance with this.
