LSCS and Taxonomy ID's when searching

Hi

We have a custom txanomy; Geography it has the following values

World
World/Europe
World/North-America

The EA against dcr's is written as

SomeID:/World - EA value when a dcr is tagged with world
SomeIDx:/World/Europe - EA value when a dcr is tagged with Europe
SomeIDy:/World/North-America - EA value when a dcr is tagged with North-America

We have a component which allows users to search content using this EA

If a user searchs for "World" all three dcr's should be returned.

In preview the ea value is written as expected however on the runtime the index is written with just the taxonomy id. What have we mis-understood, what have we got wrong ?

In particular what is the best way of searching taxonomies and what significance if any are the appended id's ???
