Add user to different groups having different roles

I need a user to have different roles on different branches.

Can I just add user to TS and not assign him any role OR do I have to assign him role while adding to TeamSite ?

If I can add user to TS without any role assigned to him, then I can add this user to different groups and assign roles to these groups. So when these groups are added to different branches, users will automatically get roles of a group.

If I assign a role to user and then add him to group, which role will take precedence ? One of group of of user OR the one with lower privileges ?

You probably could have answered your question by trying it out.

No, you are not required to assign roles to a user when adding them to TeamSite. The system will allow granting roles to a user exclusively via group memberships, and that's typically the best practice anyway.
