Backing Up TeamSite

Gosh Darnet... TS 5.5 W2K

We are currently using BrightStor EB Agent (By Computer Associates) as well as BrightStor's Backup Agent for Open Files. They are Mutually exclusive.

IW states that you should use the iwfreeze command whenever backing up the iw-store. IW also states that you should use backup software for possible Open Files (KB Article: 2205).

In here lies the rub...

BrightStor EB Agent for backing up files can run a pre and post command (iwfreeze) when performing file backup but is not made for Open Files.

BrightStor's Backup Agent for Open Files can handle Open Files but cannot run a pre or post command (iwfreeze) or batch file before backing up.

Is it safe to say that since the BrightStor's Backup Agent for Open Files with out running the iwfeeze command is good enough?

What other possible solutions could there be?

No, if you run any sort of backup without doing an iwfreeze first you will most likely end up with a bad backup and possibly a very corrupt backing store if you ever restore from a backup taken that way.

One solution that I can think of is to take TS completely down during the backup (when TS is frozen users can't write to any files in the workareas anyway... its read only). You could set up some scripts that would disable the TS services, reboot, complete your backup and then enable the services and reboot again (this is safest).

One other idea is that if you have content on multiple stores you could back up each of the stores separately (using iwstoreadm to take the store offline first).

We use Tivoli for our backups, and I've found that after iwfreze, we only get alert log entries (file in use errors) for a couple of the reporting database files.
I will, in the semi-near term write more scripts for stop/start the reporting system, so that those files backup successfully. I hate event log entries.

Unfortunately we are not running multiple backing stores. I would like not to have to reboot the server just to back up the iw-store. Any other work aorund would be helpful.

just to share with you. Our backups uses the NT native backup... no commercial stuff.
we kick off using the AT schedule that runs a batch cmd file "fullbackup.cmd", inside the batch cmd, we systematically stops the TS services and than executes the NT backup cmd after backup finishes we do a system reboot, this will bring back the system "clean and cache-flushed"...
to overcome the "Open Files" issues when using NT native backup, we edit the Registry to "go ahead and backup open files" and to "skip waiting"..

Never thought about posting about this but its interesting to see other people having the same issues/thoughts that we did. We are also using NTbackup and a nightly backup script, which shuts down the TS server and then does a backup, then reboots the box. We are trying to move away from rebooting this box every night as well.

We have experienced problems with NTBackup hanging randomly (some nights yes, some nights no), and also with Teamsite not being able to come up completely (iwfsd can start but not register with the Service Control Manager). Interwoven has suggested that we stop W3svc before we net stop iwserver, because IIS might be locking some of the files in the backing store, causing ntbackup not to complete. Anyone else seen this?

Id be VERY interested to hear what other people have experienced in nightly backups, and whether or not they are shutting down their machines each night. We are running 5.5.2 no SP and Win2k.

This is the solution I came up with. It is a copy and paste of an e-mail I sent our LAN Admin

The work around I have come up is this.
I have 2 batch(.bat) files setup to in the Windows Task Scheduler. One to Freeze the backing store at 2am everyday and one to unfreeze(thaw) the backing store at 4am every day. If you could run BrightStor's Backup Agent for Open Files on iw-store between these times that would be great. Could you also please run the regular backup agent BrightStor EB Agent on all of the system/drives at your regular backup times that would be great as well.

I know that you might be thinking 2 hours for backing up the store that's all. But I plan to keep a watch to see if it needs to be frozen longer. 1) We have just implemented TS so our store is very small and 2) The hoarse power on our TS machine is most powerful.
