Yes you can do either of those - however, if your source on Linux contains files or directories that have the same name but different cases (e.g.: "foo", "Foo", and "FOO") - you will have problems when deploying to a Windows Receiver where all three of those names will be treated identically.

Quick question...just for the sake of understanding...Why would you want to have one windows base and 4 linux rcvr's or vice verca....why not keep them all the same?

It's usually an issue of costs, powers-that-be, and historical artifacts, along with the over all web site design.
It is a good idea? Not really, but it's not that uncommon.
