We are currently using TS 6.7.2 version on solaris box. We are planning to switch to latest version 7.3.2 or 7.4 on Linux box.

Please let me know the process do we need to upgrade or need to go for new installation on Linux.

1. If we do new installation 7.3.2/7.4 on Linux, how can move migrate entire iw-store from TS 6.7.2 solaris box to linux box. Please suggest

2. IS there any way to do upgrade from 6.7.2 solaris to 7.3.2/7.4 Linux and process to move the entire iw-store.

Please let me know the entire process and also try to put some pros/cons for both Installation/upgradation.

Read the manuals, There is no one answer for this.

If you have never done this then get help. Talk to HP PSO or get another group in to help.

Your best bet is to install fresh, but this can be a fairly long process, converting and testing everything. For point of reference, Ghoti and I worked on one similar to this a couple months ago and this took about 8 man-weeks. Everything depends on legacy content/code

There is no one manual to read. Start with WS_Authoring_7.3_Install_rev1.pdf

There was information in 7.1/7.2.1 manuals, you may search for those.

There was also a webinar last spring from HP on this topic. I would see if you can find it.

My Concern is if we do new Installation of 7.4.1 latest version of TS on linux how can we move the entire iw-store from old TS 6.7.2 Solaris to newer version of TS on linux.

I am not sure can we migrate using CLT's or is there any other way to do this.

Dont think there is a need to be concerned about moving the store as we have successfully migrated from 6.7.2 on Solaris to Linux 7.2.1

Even though it was fun times, we survived Smiley Very Happy

Once you have successfully installed 7.4.1, below steps would give you a high level picture :

Configure the users/groups exactly as 6.7.2. If you have local users on the old system, create those same users with the same uid/gid
Copy the user configuration files including, tsusers.xml, tsgroups.xml files over to the new server
Even copy over the local/entities folder so that all the user preferences are preserved
Stop TeamSite on 7.4.1 and 6.7.2 servers
Copy the entire store from 6.7.2 to 7.4.1. There are many ways to copy the stores depending on the size of your store. You can tar up the entire store and do any scp, or take a full backup of the stores from one server and restore it on the new server
Once the store is copied, you can try starting up TeamSite on new server. If no issues, UI should be up.
Activate the other stores you might have using iwstoreadm CLT.
If all is well, there should be no errors in iwtrace.log
If you have reached this far, you need to perform iwidmap to get rid of any old server entries in the new store.
And the last, execute migrate_dependencies.ipl script and this is mentioned in the document too...

Solaris and Linux backingstores are compatible.

You can copy it directly and use it or you can copy it and use iwmigrate to trim it down and verify the quality. If this is an old store, the second is the best approach, though you can lose history.

Depending on the types of users, you may need to map the old users to the new ones. If they are all LDAP users, that may not be an issue.

You should liberally use iwfsck and iwfshrink during the process.

So as per your reply i will not do the upgradation from 6.7.2 to 7.4.1.

Here is my understanding as per your response. I need to do new installation of TS 7.4.1 on Linux and follow the given steps to get entire iw-store , users, groups. etc... Let me know is this correct ot not.

In the current system we have templates in perl and workflow are wft, SO we are planning to change it to XSLT and WFM using java development.

- so once we move old store to new version in the mean time on the new server parallely we can develop all the templates to xslt and java workflows without affecting older files and impacting content authors. Is that make sense.

Yea that is the best approach. Be warned that the rewrite of TPL to XSL and of WTF to WFM is not an easy task. You will be busy for a while.

Note: You only have to convert PTs from TPL to XSLT if you plan to use LDAP-only authentication (a.k.a. Non-OS Users, accounts that are not registered in /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow on the TeamSite server) - otherwise you can continue to use TPLs for as long as you like and/or switch to XSLT as desired / time permits.

Also - switching from WFT to WFM is also optional, WFTs will continue to work in 7.4.1. The issue is that any Perl code - in the WFT and/or used for external tasks and cgi tasks - would need to be converted if you're planning to use Non-OS users. If you're using local accounts, registered on the server, you can continue to use the existing code and convert as desired / time permits.

Log in as root on the system where you want to install the TeamSite server. You can also use sudo su - to gain root access when installing TeamSite. Sudo users require full root permissions to install TeamSite.

Approach 1:-

1. 6.7.2 to 7.1 Solaris upgrade and move content store to new version 7.1

2. Installation of new Linux TS 7.4.1 vm box.

3. Migration of content store from 7.1 Solaris to new VM Linux TS 7.4.1 version.

Does "Approach 2" not use a VM for Linux?

I'd say that, if it does use a VM, that "Approach 2" is probably preferred in that there are fewer installation steps to go through and, using VM snapshots, you should be able to do things in "passes" to make sure that everything is working as well as can be verified within each pass - or you revert to a previous snapshot and try again.

#1 will not work (alone). You can do that with #2. Or you can do choice 2 alone.

It really comes down to the backingstore. You can upgrade and try to get it converted or deal with it later.

You must understand this is not an end all list. There will be 100 things not listed you will have to figure out and fix. That is what you were hired to do.

There is no discussion of customizations, scripts, menu items, etc. Workflows and templates will all change.

Users will work IF the authentication is identical that is a stretch at best. iwidmap will be more likely.

WRT OS Users and OS Groups - if you can maintain the same UID / GID values for the users and groups on the new system that you have on the old system - and transfer the tsusers.xml (and tsgroups.xml) file(s) from the old system to the new system - the transfer of OS users and groups should be seamless. If you cannot maintain that inforomation from the old to the new system - iwidmap will be required (there are Support KB articles for this; if you need to go through the process I suggest you search there first for guidance)

If your paths for IWHOME and ODHOME are identical between the old and new systems, most (if not all) of the customizations should be able to be migrated trivially. If paths change (e.g.: If you had an old system where IWHOME was something like '/iw-home') then you'll have to deal with modifying lots of scripts and such to reference the new paths (you could use symlinks, but while that's a reasonable short-term fix I wouldn't recommend it for long-term maintenance)

Ultimately, you have to go through the process to understand and appreciate all that's involved - I'd suggest doing so "mentally" first, so that you can make notes of all the things you think you'll have to do so that you can approach the actual process methodically - and then update your notes as you do it. The fact that you'll have a new server to work on allows you to spend some time going back-and-forth between the systems to verify that everything works (or doesn't work) on the new system the way it worked (or didn't work) on the old system.

Without knowing the details of your existing customizations and system usage, I would suggest budgeting at least one full month for the project - keeping in mind that such projects rarely get pulled off without a hitch.

Just understand, this is not an all-inclusive list. There are going to be a lot of problems that manifest. 2 that I am almost certain are the users will not move over correctly and you will need to fix (it has been mentioned how) and the install point will likely be different for the new server than your old server. That will take a lot of time to fix.

I would always prefer Oracle.

But usually it will depend on your client/customer requirements. Most customers have a roadmap which defines which DB's they want to use.

If Oracle is enterprise choice, go with Oracle 11g or 11g RAC.

Good luck. And hope you start your installation on a LAB/Dev server first.
