change jsp directly under iw-cc.war without needing a restart

Why do we need a restart even if we do a jsp change directly under server. I think it should detect automatically and compile. JSP is used for this advantage. But Itseems jboss for Teamsite doesn't do that. Is there a config file which restricts this or its default behavior of jboss.

Note: I know we need a restart for every change we do even inside jboss server. I just want to know if there is a way to make instant. May be interwoven did it for a cause, so that messing with code in server don't reflect directly and break the functionality. But as a developer I would like to make it instant with care. Please let me know if there is a way.

Supposedly (as mentioned during user-group meetings last year) 8.0 will proivide for this functionality (not requiring [as many] jboss restarts). Hopefully we'll hear more about this during the upcoming HP Engage conference in Phoenix, September 21-23

You can technically change JSPs directly within JBoss. Sometimes, the auto-recompile may not detect the change, in which case you need to delete the cached copy in the "work" folder and reload the page. The reason why the docs tell you to make your changes in the UITK folders, is that changes to iw-cc.war directly are subject to be overwritten when one of many scenarios occur, such as:

* running a build from the UITK with a different version of the JSP, in which case your iw-cc.war changes are lost

* running a build from the UITK where a file was changed that causes a full rebuild, in which case webapps are redeployed from source and your iw-cc.war changes are lost

* some HP-provided patches and product upgrades will also trigger a full rebuild, and again you lose changes.

So basically, for development purposes, it's fine to make changes in iw-cc.war to accelerate dev work. Just don't forget to copy the changes back into the UITK structure afterwards to make sure your changes persist across those various scenarios, and that you remain on the supported path.

RE ghoti's point, TS8 is supposed to support "hot deployment", but this is mostly useful for .class and .jar changes. Without hot deploy, these files would *always* need a JBoss restart. If you wanted to make your TS7.x build process skip the restart when copying over JSPs only, you probably could do that today (although I'd question whether the effort is warranted).

Basically it should work and its working in our environment. Which JSPs you are making changes. Is it OOTB or the custom JSPs you are using for CCPRO customization. As rpoulin indicated that it may some times does not work because of the auto compilation does not happen and we need to clear the work and tmp of jboss.

Also one more thing regarding the OOTB JSPs,

when the iw-cc.war was originally exploded within Jboss (install_webapps), if it has been set not to Precompile the JSP files and it will be compiled while it is being accessed.

If you run the install_webapps and use the -jsp_precompile, then the all the JSPs are precompiled and placed in the classes folder and also it will make the entries in web.xml also. For example for /ccpro/filesys/frameset.jsp
