TeamSite 6.1 with OD receiver 7.1 – Compatibility

Hi All,

Is anyone using TeamSite 6.1 & OD Base 6.0 with OD receiver 7.1?

TeamSite 6.1 & 7.1 and all runtime servers are windows servers.

We have two TeamSite versions (6.1 & 7.1) and our team is trying to bring everything into TeamSite 7.1 so that single server can be used for managing all websites content.

As part of the migration, we are planning to upgrade all OD receivers to 7.1 first and then continue the deployment from TeamSite 7.1 & 6.1. Testing team will validate all the functionalities from TeamSite 7.1 including the deployment to actual runtime servers and provide their sign off. If everything is fine then TeamSite 6.1 server will be decommissioned and we will start using 7.1.

By following this approach, we can save intermediate runtime server configuration, testing, and point back actual runtime servers effort from TeamSite 7.1 server.

We have only one TeamSite 6.1(PROD) environment and we have to get too many approvals to make any configuration changes and performing test deployments.

I doubt anyone has the configuration since both have been EOL for a number of years.

That being said, the development team has been really good about keeping OD compatibility in all directions. There have been some notable exceptions, one was a product change and another bug or 3.

You should just test it out. But I think you will be in good shape.

Thanks Nipper. I would like to check in developer forum before I reach out for approval to make the configuration changes and test deployment.

I will perform the test deployment and check the compatibility.

Are you definitely on OD 6.0 not 6.1 ? (It just seems odd since you're on TS 6.1).
The repsonse I've gotten from support when I've previously asked a similar question is that newer bases will work with older receivers. Newer receivers talking to older bases is not supported and isn't tested by them but may work. It was a try and see situation. We were able to do so during a migration process, I can't recall the versions as it was about 8 years ago. We were going to do something similar more recently with the receiver on a windows 2012 box while Teamsite was still on 2003 but ended up not needing to.

From memory there was also a limit to the number of versions between the older and newest though I can't recall what that was.

Starting with version 5.5.1, OpenDeploy has sent version information to/from the base and receiver to determine their compatibility so as to allow older base servers to talk to newer receivers and vice-versa.

While there have occasionally been issues with the up-rev and/or down-rev deployments, they have usually been fixed by published patches and/or service packs.

Generally speaking, you shouldn't be trying to go up (or down) more than one or two revisions to avoid potentially significant compatibility issues, but as long as you are within that range, and don't attempt to use features of a newer base server that an older receiver might not recognize you should be fine. However, you should also attempt to get all parts of the system to the same level as soon as you can.
