People's Profiles on DevNet

How hard would it be to force people to fill out their profile when they become a registered DevNet user? It sure would be nice to see where people work and get some contact info since a lot of people answer and have nothing in their profile. We have no clue who these people are and how to tell if they are a customer of yours or not (since pretty much anyone can register), a consultant, or even an Interwoven employee. Knowing someone's level of expertise would definitely help people weigh whether advice is solid or not. I think it would be a good thing to force everyone to have a filled out profile.

Dude - you're the reason I made this post to begin with. You started giving a bunch of answers to people as if you really know what you're talking about, but we have no clue whether you work for Interwoven or 7-11. If you work at Interwoven you should have a profile regardless. It really gives a post weight if it's an Interwoven employee telling you what to do as opposed to the guy who sells me coffee.

A lot of forums (fora?) have a system where people can rate their fellow posters. Although since there are only about ten people here who regularly answer threads with any kind of authority anyway, maybe that's not necessary Smiley Happy

We are going to look at upgrading the forum software so people can rate posts. This may take a while, but it was suggested by numerous people.

As far as 'enforcing' people to fill out their profiles, well, I'm not sure. I don't want people to feel like they *have* to. We can encourage IWOV employees more strongly than non-iwovers, however. We can also ask/remind people to complete their profiles now and again.

As far as paying people (IWOV or non IWOV) to post, well, it's not in the budget for 2003 Smiley Happy

What's wrong with forcing people to fill out their profiles? My ****, the reasons I've gotten for why certain info can't be discussed on here have included "because our competitors can register". Wouldn't it be nice if we all knew who was who? Why would anyone who cared to register on this particular site have a problem with filling out what they do and where they work? It can only help those of us who ask for help and advice judge the responses we are getting from both the experts and the wannabe experts. Why allow people to be anonymous? Maybe you can force anyone who posts messages to fill out a profile and the lurkers could remain anonymous. It just doesn't make sense to me to allow anonymous posters on a site that is meant for specific development on a specific product.

Whose to say that people are going to fill out their profiles accurately / honestly?
How much effort does it take to validate the registration?
Who pays for that effort?

I too think it would be great if everyone filled out their profiles - but this is a "free" site - and as such, does not, in itself, (IMO) generate revenue sufficient for putting resources into background checks and such. Maybe the powers-that-be will figure out a way to do this, but basically my feeling is that even if we *did* force people to fill out some profile information, we still wouldn't post sensitive material here.

Perhaps we'll eventually have a next-generation forum that's only for officially registered users - but while that might help allow *some* more detailed information to go through, it would probably hurt *this* forum by detracting from it.

Face it - unless you actually work for Interwoven, there will always be information that you are not privy to, and I don't see that changing ever (nor do I feel it should).

Well there's a good way to look at it. Since some people will probably not fill in the profile info accurately, we might as well just forget about it. Besides that would take some effort on somebody's part to write the code that makes people fill in their profiles upon registration. Come on. Even if some people don't put in valid info, most people would. This isn't a usenet newsgroup (thank ****) - it's specifically for Interwoven developers to share ideas and give help and advice to those who ask for it. I would think the vast majority of people who bother to post here have good intentions. Allowing anonymous posters doesn't make any sense to me here.

And this is hardly a free site. I'm betting that pretty much all of Interwoven's customers are paying for it in some way shape or form. I was told that there definitely will be a "customer only" area set up on DevNet in the very near future so that customers can indeed discuss future development in the kind of detail that this kind of site is perfect for. I'm not suggesting that having people fill out their profiles should be enough to make it ok for Interwoven to discuss sensitive info (where did you get that impression anyway?) - my only point was that it definitely gives more weight to someone's advice when you know they have been working with Interwoven products for 5 years rather than 5 weeks. Some fairly significant bits of advice are given here, that could potentially bring down a production system if someone doesn't really know what they are talking about. You can't stop that, but you can certainly provide more detailed profile info so people can better weigh the advice.

I don't think people are advocating going to the effort to do background checks or anything. Just a simple form with required fields that is filled out upon registration. That would at least cut down on the people like me... the first couple months after signing up for devnet, I kept putting off doing my profile, because it was a separate thing. I was always thinking, "I should create my profile", but then got sidetracked to more pressing matters. Laziness? Maybe, but I view it more as I'm busy, I'm multitasking, and it's not a priority. By making it part of registration, boom, it's done.

How difficult can that be? Yes, people will lie. Yes, people can go in and change the profiles later. But for the most part, I think it would be very useful, and something simple to achieve. Well worth the taxing resources it would take IW to put some "required" attributes on form fields. ****, post the registration form... I'm sure someone here would be willing to do it.

If all you're looking for is required fields in the profile - regardless of whether they're filled in uniformly and/or accurately - then I see nothing wrong with that.
