Removing EDITIONS without loosing versions of the files

Hi,

I have script to delete month old EDITIONS. This script uses "iwrmed" command to remove the EDITION.

Due to removing EDITIONS we are lossing versions on the files. Is there a way to delete EDITIONS without loosing verions of the files.

Or - why not change the threshold and only delete year-old or n-year-old editions rather than month-old editions.

Hi Ghoti,

Lot of editions are impacting TS/IDOL indexing search performance, so we need to clean up the EDITIONS on monthly basis.

I can see where lots of editions might hurt the initial indexing performance, but once indexed it should be incremental from there. Also once indexed, search should not be affected either since it's basically a query on a DB which is generally quick regardless of how many results there are.

If you keep deleting editions, then you keep invalidating the index, which means you'd have to re-index the branch, which will then likely cause you performance issues because you'd have to throw away the existing indexes and re-perform the initial indexing again (it's possible that the system might clean itself up to avoid some of these issues - not sure).

It might be better to look at all the options available for the indexing and search services to see if you can tune things better to avoid whatever probems it is that you believe you are experiencing.

You could also, reduce the frequency of edition creation, but then you have to also determine why you're creating the editions in the first place and if reducing the frequency (or deleting month-old editions) is in conflict with the original intent.

Do you actually Search through various Editions? That would seem cumbersome and tedious. And horrible. We used to index all Editions and it took (literally) days to re-index if anything ever became corrupted, or we upgraded, or whatever the reason. It was brutal. Then after we went through a lot of back and forth with the Search engineers on another issue, they asked me if we really need to index all Editions. We ultimately decided to config the indexer to only index the most recent Edition, as well as Staging and the Workareas. Indexing all of our content now takes less than 2 hours. And we have never ever needed to search for anything from previous Editions. So unless you really find yourself searching through old Editions, there's no reason to index them all.
