Do deletes without removing everything...

nipper

I cannot use do_deletes since it blows everything not in TS out. Is there a way to configure if I remove blah.html from TS that it get removed but if foo.html is in prod & never was in TS, it stays ?

I just do not want to go experiment on my prod server. :-)

well i guess its the whole point of do_deletes...

you can either channel all your assets through teamsite for deployment.

or use do_deletes on filelists only.

you can run the deployment in simulated mode ('-sim' on the command line) and look at the logs (or the Reports in the Admin GUI) to see what it *would* have deleted.
as suggested, if you know you just deleted a file within TS and you want to deploy that deletion, then use a filelist deployment with doDeletes enabled. If the file referenced doesn't exist in the source area, it will generate a deletion action for it on the target side.
if you are using a sourceTeamsite deployment - the same holds true - because it will essentially generate a list of differences between the two areas and perform deletions on the target side for any files that are in previousArea but not in [source] area.

Ghoti,

Can you give a small code example of how to deploy using doDeletes for all content except for one or two "known" specific directories?

For example say my target is /docs

I want to delete all appropriate files and directories under /docs on target except for the directory named "pets" and all content under "pets"

How do I configure doDeletes NOT to delete "pets" even though "pets" is NOT in the TeamSite source area. It's placed on the target by an outside process.

I did RTFM but could not find this scenario.

Many thanks in advance.

What kind of deployment are you wanting to do?

If filelist-based, then leave the files to be preserved out of the filelist.

If TeamSite comparison-based and the files to be preserved are not in TeamSite, then you shouldn't need to do anything special.

If directory comparison-based, then use filters to exclude the files to be preserved from the comparison.

As you didn't say, I will assume you are talking about either OpenDeploy 5.5.1 or 5.6 in the few places where it might make a difference.
There are essentially two kinds of filters:

Source-side filters: Source-side filters only exist within the <pathSpecification> element (usually directly below / at the same level as the <path> element).
Target-side filters: Target-side filters can exist within the <targetRules> element at the <nodeRef> level or within the <pathSpecification> element, or they can exist within the <target> element.

Okay - now we have two types of filters - what can you do with them? Based on your use-case scenario - you are deploying the contents (or lack-thereof) of a directory named docs/ which exists on both source and target sides, but the directory docs/pets only exists on the target side and you want to preserve it - yes?

To preserve the directory docs/pets from being seen by OpenDeploy on the target side when it doesn't exist on the source side, all you should need is a target-side filter: <excludePath subPath="docs/pets"/>

Put that into your configuration (remember, target-side filter) and then run the deployment in simulated mode (either through the Admin GUI or using the -sim flag on the command line, and look over the logfiles to see whether it would have done what you wanted it to do.

I have a similar scenario which I was only able to resolve by using the excludePattern option. A lot of our websites have Index Server catalogs which reside only on the webserver. The catalog info resides in the document root in a directory called "catalog.wci". Usually when deploying with "doDeletes=yes" it wouldn't remove this directory (because Index Server won't allow it), but one day I noticed my catalog was gone from particular website. So I needed to put a target filter so that it would ignore this directory.

The only working solution I came up with was the following in the target element:
<filters>
<excludePattern regex="\\catalog\.wci"/>
</filters>

I tried using the excludePath element but didn't have any luck. A tried these variations:
<excludePath subpath="catalog\.wci" />
<excludePath subpath="/catalog.wci" />
<excludePath subpath="catalog.wci" />
<excludePath subpath="/catalog.wci/" />
<excludePath subpath="/catalog\.wci/" />
<excludePath subpath="\\catalog.wci" />

All of them still deleted the /catalog.wci directory. I wonder if the period in the directory name has something to do with it.

No biggie, I got it working with the regex, but was curious why I couldn't get the excludePath to work.

Make sure the path specified in the subPath attribute is relative to the area attribute value of the sourceFilesystem or sourceTeamsite elements.

Still didn't get that to work. Here is the definition segment of my config:

<definition name="source">
<source>
<sourceFilesystem area="Y:\default\main\projects\projectname\EDITION" filelist="">
<pathSpecification>
<path name="web"/>
<filters>
<excludePattern regex=".*(\.scc$)|(\.fla$)|(_notes$)"/>
</filters>
</pathSpecification>
</sourceFilesystem>
</source>
<target useReplicationFarm="Targets">
<targetFilesystem area="e:\inetpub\sites\projectname.com\wwwroot"/>
<filters>
<excludePattern regex="\\catalog\.wci"/>
</filters>
<comparisonRules dateDifferent="no" revert="no" ignoreAcls="yes" ignoreModes="no" ignoreUser="no" ignoreGroup="no"/>
<transferRules doDeletes="yes" dontDo="no" preserveAcls="no" followLinks="no" svrTryCount="" svrTryInterval="" svrTryDisableOverwrite="no" rmReadOnly="yes"/>
<permissionRules amask="" omask="" directory="0755" file="0644" group="" user="" changeAccess="" setAccess=""/>
</target>
</definition>

Like I said, I got it working with the pattern statement but was curious what I'm doing wrong.

FYI, both the source and receiver are running OD 5.6 on Win2k.

I would have expected <excludePath subpath="catalog.wci" /> or <excludePath subpath="\catalog.wci" /> to work.

You may want to open a Tech Support case for help and to determine whether there's a bug.

I think the reason you might be having troubles with the excludePath element is that the 'P' in "subPath" is supposed to be capitalized. In your examples you have it in lowercase.

<excludePath subPath="catalog.wci" />

should keep the directory from being removed.

Nice catch. It worked. Things like this always come down to syntax and it always takes someone else to point out the problem Smiley Happy

That's why developers shouldn't test their own code.

ProfessorX

I am doing something similiar

I have a \website folder

and I want doDeletes="yes"
but I don't/can't remove the logs or cache folder

I have just this

<target useReplicationFarm="PRODUCTION_SERVERS" >
<transferRules svrTryCount="10" svrTryInterval="20" doDeletes="yes"/>
<targetFilesystem area="x:\website" >
<filters>

<excludePattern regex="cache" />
<excludePattern regex="[Ll][Oo][Gg][Ss]" />
</filters>
</targetFilesystem>
<comparisonRules dateDifferent="no" >
</comparisonRules>
<permissionRules >
</permissionRules>

</target>

This doesn't work it still removes them

Any help?

Not sure why that isn't working for you - Perhaps you can post (as an attachement) a zip of both the server and receiver log files (macro and micro) that someone could take a look at? Not sure if I'll have the time, but someone else may be able to throw some cycles at it...

Also - include the version information (version, patches, service packs) and platform information (sender and receiver) - and if possible, perhaps a 'before' snapshot / listing of the source area(s) and target area(s).
