Your experiences from upgrading TS501SP1 to TS552?
System
Hi all.
We're starting to mentally prepare for the migration to TS552, and as always I'm curious to get som real life comments, not the ordinary 'it's never been easier' comments from the supplier....
So, anyone who's been in TS, TST, OD and DD 501 and compatible versions and successfully upgraded to TS552 and corresponding versions of the other products: What's your experience, any hints how to best do it, how much IW consulting did you use, how long did it take etc etc..
Many thanks for helping out, your input is valuable to us!!

Hey Hakan,
I did the upgrade on 3 machines over the course of 6 weeks from 10/02 to 11/02. All in the all, the upgrade was pretty smooth, but I think my upgrade was pretty easy because I didn't do any of the "backing store conversion" stuff. My users didn't care enough about the metadata to warrant going through all the trouble--- so I just re-imported the content once the installations were done, and I did an "in place" upgrade (i.e., uninstall 5.0.1, install 5.5.2).
A couple of surprises was that (and I don't know how this happened) my OD 5.0.1 installation in /opt/od5 was blown away following the completion of my ts5.5.2 installation (in /teamsite/iw-home). This happened 2-out-of-3-times, so I'm not sure what that was about. Alledgedly, the two products are separate and the uninstallation of TS 5.0.1 and the installation of TS 5.5.2 should have nothing to do with some OD installation off to the side. It was probably something I did, but I was pretty **** careful, so my advice would be to back up your whole server, not just the stuff you *think* is going to be affected.
I was also kinda **** that IW changed the way certain environment variables are defined. Within custom menu items, for example, any reference to the cgi parameters that used to return "/iwmnt" will now return "/.iwmnt". If you had the foresight not to write regexes starting with "/iwmnt" then you'll be fine. Otherwise (like me), you'll have to go through all your stuff and make sure you're looking for "/.iwmnt" now.
Lastly, if you are also upgrading your OD from 5.0.1 to 5.5.1 (I didn't at first . . . my OD upgrade happened 2 months after the TS upgrade), be on the lookoutfor DNR functionality that slightly changes. I had a DNR script running on a 5.0.1 box that, after upgrading to 5.5.1, completely broke because the user running the deployment on my TS box didn't have a unix account on the box on which the DNR script was running. As of 5.5.1, there's an "as=" parameter in the < script > section of a deployment that is important to consider, given that by default the same uid that owns the deployment will also own the DNR process.
Hope that helps a little,
Tom

I'm also very interested in this since this Thursday - I'm going to install the Teamsite SP2, Teamsite Templating SP2, DataDeploy SP2 for DAS and the Workflow Builder SP2 -
any additional - watch-out for's would be helpful
Since, I have two servers which we installed SP1 on in October - I don't have any backing stores to date - therefore I hope to avoid any major problems (like all my DCT and DCR's being zapped)

Nah, the SPs and patches are always a piece of cake.
You're lucky that you have more than 1 TS server you can upgrade because it gives you time to flush out all the little one-offs that happen whenever you make big changes.
Avoiding the backing store migration will also make your life easier. Though, I asked around these boards last Fall before I did my upgrade and people were generally very flattering of the backing store conversion process. . . it has a rep of being pretty smooth.
