want to put some check in submit task in approver workflow

Hi All,

In my current workflow we have few authors who are also in approvers list and now we want to check that when authors submit file after doing some changes for deployment and selects himself as the approver from approver dropdown list then its should give error message like "please select other approver other than you"

is there anyway to check in submit task like we can have some logic to check it.

let me know if some more clarification is required.

First you need to provide some details,

Is this a WFT or WFM ? What OS and what version of TS (not necessarily important to this question but good habit to have). The WFT/WFM question will determine how it is implemented

You want to trigger this error well befor ethe review step. I always do this in the initial screen. It is easy in JS (for WFM) or in Perl (for WFT) to not allow the user to select themself as a reviewer/approver. It is better if you can remove them from that option. That is more complex.

I am using TS 732 running in linux and WFM for creating workflow.

As you said we can use JS file to have check before user select himself from the approver list drop down to submit the changes.

Can you please give ur input on this.

I suggest you read the following:

The WFM manual regarding the creation of custom instantiation forms (I imagine you've already done this, but...)
The FormsPublisher FormAPI manual (as [most of the] FormAPI [functionality] is available within the custom instantiation form
The WFM manual regarding datasources - as this is a common and customizable way to provide select lists within the WFM custom instantiation form

You may be able to do all that you want by writing your own custom datasource - e.g.: pass it a parameter for the criteria on which to generate the list of users to put into the select list and a parameter for entries to be excluded from that list (no JS needed, all Java)

Alternatively you can use an OOTB datasource and trigger JS code to post-process the generated list of users to remove the entry you want to elminate.

Alternatively you can write custom callServer code (in Java or Perl) and again, either remove the desired entry from the generated list within that code or by using JS to post-process it.

Beyond that - you need to do the work yourself (or hire someone to do it for you) - at the very least you'd need to put some effort into writing the code and post it along with explanations of what it is / is not doing to get assistance with your code.

Hi Ghoti,

1) I created the custom datasource for getting the list of approvers from approver group created (ex: "approver_test"), so any ts user part of this group will be there as the approver, now this datasource is added in review task. I just want to know how to check the condition before the workflow job is initated to get the job owner name/id from it and remove that name from approver list if that is present as one of the approver.

2) I also tried using the custom_instantiation.cfg to validate if workflow job owner trying to submit the file by selecting himself as the approver from the approver dropdown list, should get error for selecting different approver other than himself. but I was not able to get the workflow job owner variable,?

You want input - you need to provide code and, if possible, a sample of input/output from your code.

The simplest question is: How are you getting [attempting to get] the identify of the job initiator?

Assuming you have code for that - is it getting a name, a userid, or an object (that likely contains the userid along with other information)?

In your Workflow Properties - how is Owner defined? Is it the standard "$IW_USER" or something else?

The code you have now for your datasource is trying to access the owner of the job as if the job were already instantiated - but it isn't, so I doubt you can access it as such - (you don't seem to have any debugging lines for that except if the attempt causes an exception (which it might, but the error message might be somewhat convoluted / obscure)

When you create a Job or Global Variable that is a DataSource - you should be able to provide variables for it (at the bottom of the pop-up dialog) - and you should, I believe, be able to pass in things like "jobOwner" = "$IW_USER" - and then you should be able to access that variable within your datasource code.

If you attach a variable (parameter) to the datasource job (or global) variable, I believe you should be able to access that variable (parameter) within the custom datasource code - no, I do not have any examples, I'm just assuming it can be done - and if so, you should be able to eliminate the job owner from the list of users returned by the datasource during the instantiation process (no JS required)

Alternatively, if you setup the job owner as a Configurable Variable with a default value of $IW_USER, you should be able to access that variable within the custom instantiation form (via FormAPI) such that you could either check-and-fail if the selected reviewer is the same as the job-owner, or post-process and eliminate the job owner from the list returned by the datasource.

It's possibe you might be able to reference the job-owner workflow property without making it a configurable variable, but I'm even less sure about that.

Beyond the above - it's up to you to work on the code and debug it if it doesn't work - and then, if you're still stuck, post the code and all debugging output information and maybe someone here will be willing to spend some of their free time to look over it and help you.
