Auto select a template data-type

When creating a new DCR using a single available template within a category, the user must browse the category folder and select the template in two separate steps.

In this case, when the category contains only a single template (when the templating.cfg category contains only a single data-type), is there a way to allow that template to be automatically selected?

Are you trying to accomplish that the user would only have to select the category if there were only a single data type??

This is much easier in TeamSite 6.0, as the user is presented with one click access to all of the possible templates that are available to them.

Otherwise, I am not sure of the context you are working in, but the Casual Contributor Interface (CCI) has a newfile link that allows you to specify category and data type, which takes the user directly to the template. This would have to be put into a cgi window or something within a workflow for it to really be feasible or potentially an email message.
