I don't believe there is any [supported] way to do this - the icons generally only distinguish between 'file' and 'directory' and their "state" (hence you don't see different icons for Word docs, PDFs, etc.).
I think one of the reasons for this is that since there are a bunch of different states, for any new "type" icon, they would have to create all the corresponding "type/state" icons - and if that involved using the established "type" icons - there might even be a copyright issue involved... (of course I could be wrong ...)

This is the sort of customization that is easier to do with TS 6.0. you might want to check out the 6.0 material here on DevNet

Will TS6 actually allow you to customize which icons are used relative to the display of files based on the file types?
I suppose it might, but it would seem to me (not having played with TS6 yet) that this would be a pretty significant undertaking as far as customizations go - wouldn't it?

Modifying the file icons is not available as a customization. As mentioned earlier in this thread, the icons include state information (locked, modified, deleted, etc.), so you would need lots of new icons for each file type. To further complicate your particular issue, the only way to know if a file is a DCR is to check for the magic extended attribute. The backend calls to the server to get the file data do not currently have the ability to return extended attributes along with the list of files, so an additional call for each file in the list is needed to determine if it is a DCR -- this would have a dramatic impact on performance.

Thank you for the clarification - that was exactly my point (I was the one who mentioned all the state information that would need to be captured in the icons) - I didn't think this was an intended customization and as such I doubted with was something that would be either recommended or perhaps even supported.
