BIRT Data Explorer Query

I just built BIRT 2.2.2 from the source.

The data explorer view in BIRT comes only if I open the report editor.

I'm looking for a way so the data explorer can show all the data sources/ sets even if the report editor is not in view.
Where in code is it specified that the data explorer will show when report editor is present as the editor.
I want to change it to text editor. How can I do it?

Please guide me as I'm new to Eclipse/ Plugin development.
