BIRT/Actuate Feature Comparison

We have development teams using both BIRT and Actuate. For every new project it is hard to tell when to use BIRT and when to use Actuate. Is there a feature comparison or developer guideline anywhere? What does Actuate solve that BIRT does not?

Actuate has several complete lines of products , so i'm not sure which product would you like to compare with BIRT.

If you're talking about eReports , it's a completely different approach than BIRT. The 2 tools are actually complementary.

BIRT is web based to build interactivity and web 2.0 effects while eReports is built for speed,mass reporting and pixel perfect brochure quality reporting.

BIRT is good at building the "flashy" part of a dashboard for instance, but eReports will build the backbone high-performance reports for it. Another BIRT based products like Interactive Viewer and ReportsStudio will offer you ad-hoc reporting , eSpreadsheet will offer massive Excel generation and security etc.

Different needs , different user population , different tools :-)
